Does anyone know if there is a gunsmith in Texas that has a clue about FAL's?
Also how does one replace the hold open? do I remove that little screw on the receiver next to the pivot pin, and if so how many little springs and gadgets are gonna come poppin' out? I was looking at an exploded diagram but itwas just too tiny to get much detail.
thanks

Nothing should fly out. That pin also serves as the axel for the magazine release, but it should stay more or less in place if you don't try to manipulate it with the pin removed.

With that pin removed, the old hold open device should slip out though the bottom. Easy.

To get the new one in is a little tricky, because of the spring loaded plunger inside the hold open device (to drop the device out of the way when the follower isn't pushing it up). I use a small pin, like a paperclip inserted from the opposite side, to depress the little plunger while I'm inserting the axle pin.

About 10 minutes worth of work, max. A gunsmith would probably snicker as he took your money.

thanks Destructo, I can do the hold open now. What I really needed the smith for was to cut down the barrel and add a muzzle brake, as well as check out my gas piston / plug / tube, I think it is a touch messed up. I have always been happy with my usual gunsmith (ramp jobs, trigger, etc.) but after he looked at it, he told me to come get it, he didn't know anything about them and didn't have suitable tools for the job.
again thanks for the hold open info.

I got my first FN-FAL last weekend ita a R1A1 sporter from C.A.I. its built on an Imbel receiver. For some reason the bolt hold open device has had its pin that the magazine engages filed off. I dont understand why this is like this.
Also the gas tube plug seems loose. I can set the gas regulator to one and the rifle short cycles and smokestacks. I ordered a SA R1A1 kit yesterday I hope that between all the parts I will be able to solve this problem besides I needed a hold open device front sling swivel and some other extra parts anyway. When the thing was functioning it shot well I realy like this rifle I'll get it dialed in soon and I'll have a good shooter. Any of you have some input on the solder on muzzel breaks.

End of ramble

Have you guns checked out http://www.fnfal.com yet? Derek at AZEX Arms or the Gunplumber, both in Arizona, should be able to cure any FAL problems. There are a lot of other smiths that post there, so you may find one local to you.
