FAL Rifles

I am looking to get one of these. Opinions on the DSA, and HesseArms. How is the quality of these two rifles?

Mackie - I had the pleasure of shooting a DSA manufactured FAL and was very impressed. The fit, finish and function were outstanding and the accuracy was impressive. Off the bench, I was shooting 2" groups at 100 yards through open sights using military surplus ammo.

I don't have any personal experience with Hesse models, but have heard that quality and reliability are hit or miss.

Hesses and Centurys are great buys for the money. But with those computer milling machines the DSA is the top dog in FN-FALs. You will not feel bad about paying the extra money, unless Bush does not sign the AW ban extension in 2004 which would really mess up the market, in a good way.

I have an Argie FAL which shoots the same with military surplus (Argie surplus currently). I have never shot anything but my Argie or the DSArms versions.

Let your budget decide.

Stay away from Hesse... they are pretty crappy rifles unless your really lucky and find a decent one. But I have to admit - I've never seen a decent one.

After reading a few posts concerning .308 semi-autos (military pattern) I have started looking into the FAL/STG-58. How much are the DSA'a going for? (Oh, already have a 91.)

I think the DSA standards go for about $1300, with a 3-6 month wait.

Maybe an Arizona Response Systems rifle would be a better alternative.

Thanks guys for the replys. After reading the replys to my post and the other similiar posts, I will be going with the DSA FAL.

My Century Arms STG58 with home made funky safety modifications. Yep that is a cut down 9mm case, which gives better engagement with the thumb, covered the head of the case with a little GP glue to make it look less a case, and also to keep dirt and moisture from getting into primer pocket. Their is a flat piece of metal between the grip and receiver, to stop the safety from going past the semi position.

I think we have a winner!

Oldest resurrected gun forum thread :D

That is a nice FAL but I don't think that any such addition to the safety lever is really needed. Or it would have been done by FN before I was even born.

But not much before :(

Bart Noir
Who just saw a FAL at the gunshow that didn't have a wobbly rear sight!!!!

Bart do you own or ever spent anytime firing an FAL Rifle, other than the
L1A1? The FAL is a great rifle, but it does have features that could have been improved on, one and foremost is the design of the safety, not easy to engage with the thumb, when going from safe to fire. The British FAL aka the L1A1 rectified this with their design of the safety. My home made modification helped me to large degree with this issue. I'm not the only one who has this issue with their FAL, their have been talks about taking the safety from a L1A1, and modifying to fit other FAL's Now here's the fly in the ointment, most FAL's are made with metric measurements, the British L1A1, and few others are made using inch measurements.

'Fraid not.
The inch & metric (for the most part) have the same screws, the notation is metric or inch but the screw is the same.

Wogpotter, Ok so the screws are the same, but the parts that the screws hold, are either metric, or inch, and matting the two is trickey at best. JMHO.

I have to disagree with that also.
Probably 85% of the parts are interchangeable.
I have Inch pattern Charging handle, inch pattern safety selector, & inch pattern mag release on a metric gun with no problems.
Not everything swaps but that is because of design changes like the fire-control chain, or the differing plane for iron sights, but not because of inch to metric conversions as there weren't any.

I never did anything to my STG58 other than put on a picatinny rail receiver cover, and my home made modifications. So I'm gonna ask because I honestly don't know. Why do they specify inch or metric? I also heard that inch pattern mags fit loosely in metric guns.

Parts interchangeability is more like 95%. The odd man out is the Israeli barrel which, ironically, has the same thread as a Jap Arisaka.
