FAL in .223?

I heard a rumor a while back that FAL's were going to be introduced in .223? Anybody confirm or deny?

Thanks.

The FNC is very different internally. The CAL was the original scaled down .223, however it wasn't up to FN's standards of reliability so they dropped the design and made the FNC instead.

There are also FALs chambered in .223. Some were imported by Springfield armory I believe.

Springfield had a .223 FAL variant. Never seen one though. The great thing about it was that it took M16 mags.

I think the FAL was designed for a small round like .223 and it was demanded to fire a .308 so the scaled it up for the bigger round.

Might not be true but it explains the poor ergonomics.

Yup. The basic design is WW II vintage. The FN-FAL would have been a short 7mm (British cartridge that I feel produces close to ideal ballistics), but was upscaled to .308.

Here's an article from Chuck Karwan about it.

The FAL would have been the ideal assault rifle, except for U.S. insistence on a high-power round.
