FAL cravings...

I've decided. Someday, I'm going to buy myself another semiauto military-pattern rifle. I've had AKs and ARs. But this time it's going to be different. This time it's going to be a keeper. This time it's going to be a DS Arms FAL. I briefly had a parts gun FAL that I sold before ever shooting, but the DS Arms is going to be different. It isn't going to be piecemeal. It's going to be one of their Authentic Austrian FALs, that come with a hard case. And while I'm being a big spender, I may as well get the scope mount, the tool kit, and DS Arms' accessory package, which includes four 20 round magazines, two leather pouches, one leather sling, a bayonet and scabbard, and a muzzle cap.

Hell, if I can ever afford it, I might get their black walnut furniture set. Ooh, I bet wood would look really nice on a FAL.

I generally like short-barreled carbines, but this time I think I'll get the full 21" barrel (not certain yet). Doing so would give me better ballistics, a more traditional look, and I don't think I'm going to be room clearing with such a rifle anyway (although in WWII, soldiers did urban warfare with Garands, Mausers, and Nagants).

I wonder if there's a different grip I could get? The grip angle on the FAL is a little more than what I'm used two, but it's not a big deal. Yeah, they have the "sniper" grips, but I'm a lefty and those things are molded for the right hand.

I think five magazines will be a good start. That's 100 rounds of .308, fine for a shooting session. I'll need to buy a case of ammo, two, probably surplus FMJ stuff.

This will, of course, have to wait, as I'm kinda broke right now. But it's something I want.

Flying and aviation used to be my big thing, now it's guns. I think that's partly because I can't afford to go flying anymore right now (ninety bucks an hour for lessons is expensive). I'll get back at it someday, though. Those sixty something hours I spent in the air won't go to waste!

...But I digress.

You seem to be on the right track.

If it's going to be a keeper, do you think a parts kit gun, with a smattering of new parts (barrel, fire control, and wood stocks) would be doable? Someone like Derek at AZEX arms or the Gunplumber could put something together that would probably trump the quality of a DSA gun and have the advantage of being tailored to your tastes. Realistically, though, it would cost about the same as the DSA.

I'm saving now for a good, solid FN FAL myself. I figure to go $1500 or so for it.

The only thing that might keep me from it is if I get that much money together I might be tempted to gather a little more and get a nice .50 BMG instead. :D

Aloha

Newbie with a first post here!

Anyway, I am in the same boat. I am going abroad for a couple months, and when I get back, I am all for getting myself an FAL. DSA sounds like the way to go!

BUT

Does anyone have any oppinions of DSA and any of their competetors from first hand experience? I don't MIND spending $1000-$1500 for one, after all, you get what you pay for. But I would like first hand opinions from anyone willing to give them!

Thanks in advance!

The Jackelope

PS-no, I'm not a DSA employee fishing for compliments :D

Because...

I was flat broke struggling through college and couldn't afford any ammunition. I needed the money badly, so I sold it.

I have a DSA Austrian FAL on order. What they don't tell you on thier website is that the ATF just banned thier long muzzle brake depicted on the picture. My rifle, the first time I ordered it, came with long muzzle weight. No ports at all, just a solid piece of tubular metal. The dealer called DSA and got the scoop. I sent it back. So, now DSA is building me one with the SA58 muzzle brake at no charge. It should arrive in the next couple days. To me, DSA should change thier web site to depict the real muzzle brake or at least say something about. Their web site is the only place they advertise this rifle. And they should advertise it properly. I'll post my impressions of the rifle when it arrives.
