Fair Price Model 19?

Hello All,

I am looking to at a Smith & Wesson Model 19 6" pinned and recessed revolver. The blue seems flawless and it is rated at 95% +. It has a target hammer, trigger, and grips. It comes with original box, tools, and papers. All of them match. It was manufactured in 1980.

I have two questions.

1. Is $415 dollars too much to pay for this handgun?

2. How much .357 magnum or .38 +P can this revolver handle?

I mainly just want to use it for bedside protection, range shooter, and general asthetic enjoyment. Thanks for your help, I don't know where else to turn.

PS: Should I just hold out and try to get a flawless Model 28 for $450-475?

Go for it. Mine has held up to 180 gr 357 Magnums with no issues. Shoot 158 gr 38 Specials at the range. 180 gr 357 Magnums for defense/hunting. That price is reasonable for the description.

It's a classic! didn't say where you are, but for the condition you describe, I would be tempted. Get it for your Christmas gift to yourself, and enjoy!:D

The only magnum ammo that can give it problems are the hot light loads (110 and 125 grainers). That's not a bad price for one in that condition today. If the M28 fits your hand it is a much better shooter IMO. The M19 was the answer to please those who didn't want to carry the heavier M28.

that will really depend on your area. S&W revolvers vary in price greatly across the country. I passed on an unboxed Model 19 that was 98% that was on a pawn shop shelf for $219. The gun was gone the next time I checked. I am still kicking myself over that one. Your area of the country may be very different. The price might be high for your region, it might be normal. I doubt it is low.

Chances are, all you can afford to feed it. If you are the Donald Trump of the range, sending thousands of rounds downrange a day, you might want a M28. If you do 50 rounds or so every couple of weeks, this M19 should last quite a while.

For a difference of $35, all other things being equal, I would choose the M28.

I think that what you really have to look at is the longevity of the gun, your expectations, and the amount of .357 you intend to shoot. Yes, the K frame M19 is lighter, but if you are not going to carry it on your hip, the heavier N frame M28 will outlast it and be more pleasurable to shoot.

Then again, if you get the M19 for a good price in your area (the amount of which we are unsure of since we do not know your area) then you can use it in trade for a M28 at a later date, and possibly trade dead even and have shot and had a great deal of enjoyment with the M19 while looking for the right M28.

I had the option of buying 2 M-28s (4 and 6 inch barrels) and a M-19 once at a gun show. They were all the SAME price. But that was from one individual. Prices of M-28s do seem to be pretty cheap though.

I picked the 6 inch M-28 since I prefer a 4 inch .38 Special for cww and use the M-28 for a range gun putting spare hot loads down the range that might wear out my smaller Official Police

I paid $300 for this one, but that was a few years ago.

$415 sounds a bit high to me, but if that's the "asking" price the selling price may be closer to $350.

Good Luck...

Joe

A little high, a lot of these were made for cops, but in 4inch barrels. Again, depends on where you are. It's an all purpose gun, but in 6 inches not a CCW piece, except in cold climates with heavy clothes.
A flawless 27 might be that expensive, a flawless 28 (highway patrol) should be in the $300.-$350 range.
If you like a lot of self abuse, (magnums all the time, go for an N frame), for range shooting and SD for bedside protection, and general asthetic enjoyment, the 19 is great. If you can afford it, get them both, you'll never regret it.

$415.00 for a 95% revolver is a little high but not exorbitant. I paid $375.00 for a similar piece (P&R, 95%ish) about 2-3 months ago. BUT...prices on K-Frames are going up. It's not like they will become scarce anytime soon, but as with anything else that is no longer made, supply & demand will dictate price.

For the $40.00 difference between yours and mine, you have to figure time, effort, and really, how much you like to "wheel and deal" into the equation.

Thanks guys.

I have decided not to get the 6" Model 19.

I am going to save a bit more and buy a 6" Model 28 instead. I figure I want to shoot more .357 and not harm the gun too much and not harm myself too much either.

I will eventually get a Model 19, but probably a 4" model.

Thanks again for all your input. I will get both the N & K frames one day!
