Fair Price for Browning Hi-Power?

I'm posting for a buddy w/o Web access. I'll rely all replies to him. Thanks.

"I'm interested in a 9mm Browning Hi-Power. Found one locally for $499 NIB. Is this a fair price? Is it true Browning will no longer import the HP? The trigger feels very nice. It breaks clean and crisply. Is this the norm? Where can I find affordable preban 13 rounds mags?"

So many pistols, so little money.

Not real sure about the price, but I think it is okay. I just picked one up (actually a '74 Belgian made one in very good condition) from someone on the web and paid $400 for it, but by the time I paid shipping, transfer fee, and state sales tax, it came to about $450. Your friend will probably love the gun as for me it is the only gun that can compete with that sweet feel of the 1911 in my hand.
Pre-ban magazines can be had at gun shows and are also advertised in gun magazines (from Ajax, I think). However, tell your friend to be careful as I bought some at a great price, but they do not work well. Mec-Gars are excellent but the last two I found cost me $75 for the pair.

I think the price of $499 for a NIB MarkIII HiPower is a fair price. I would think that one might be found for $450 or so.

Browning said they will continue the HiPower in the United States through 2000, but said nothing about 2001 and beyond.

If your friend has found an out-of-the box HiPower with a clean and crisp trigger, he might want to contact "Guinnes (sp?) Book of Records," they'll probably find it cause enough to get out a new edition.

A 13 round magazine with the Browning name on it might be a touch expensive (say $60 to $75), but there are plenty of 13 rounders by others costing in the neighborhood of $20. Also, there 17 rounders that I've seen priced from $25 to $35. Bottom line: high capacity magazines for the HiPower are plentiful and well within the reasonable price range.

My carry weapon is a HiPower with a 17 round magazine. The HiPower is a tried-and-true classic weapon that anyone can be proud of. It eats about any ammo you can feed it and is a heck of a lot more acurrate than I am.

Considering the present market I think it is a fair price. I have tried the South African 17 round magazines; they aren't pretty but they work just fine. Regards, Richard.

I purchased a new ('98 prod.)Hi-Power in December here in MA for $570. It's the polished blue model with adjustable sights. Seemed fair. The matte blue, fixed sight, rubber gripped MK III models, both 9mm and .40 S&W, were available for $439. The last information I was privy to indicated that Browning is not stopping import on Hi-Powers, they just didn't import any this year because sales have been extremely slow. A call to the nice folks at Browning should clear the air. Hope this helps.

I just picked up a 9mm Mk III a couple of weeks ago. It was ever so slightly used, in the box & already had the magazine disconnector removed. About a 98% gun with 2 "factory" mags for $400. I use quotes around "factory" because they aren't made by Browning. If I remember correctly, it's MecGar who makes 'em, but you didn't ask about the mags, did ya? ;> )
