Failure to Feed Question

While shooting yesterday, I was getting the occasional failure to feed. The slide would lock back, just like on an empty magazine, but with rounds still in the mag, no round in the chamber. It was ejecting fine. I wasn't keeping track, but if I remember correctly, it was happening with two or three rounds left in the mag. I was using two different mags, and didn't think to mark them to see if it was the same one each time. It happened three times out of about 100 rounds (loading six rounds per mag).

Does this sound like a magazine problem (maybe the spring or follower) or an internal one?

What kind of gun is it?

To venture a guess without knowing the gun, if it were a 1911 I'd first suspect the slide lock plunger. Maybe it's binding up somehow, causing the slide lock to bounce into the slide prematurely?

If you figure out that it only happens with one mag, a little grinding on the top feed lip closest to the slide lock may be in order.

dunno....

Could also be shooter induced. If you're right handed, where's your right thumb? Is it resting on or against the slide stop? Could it be recoil causing your thumb to engage same?

Easiest test: have another shooter try your gun to see if the same malfunctions arise.

If not the strong hand thumb (right hand) could it be the left thumb if your left hand is used to support the strong hand?

What gun is it?
Some things come to mind as I had this happen to my CZ Compact....people told me strong side thumb, bad slide lock etc etc....
What it turned out to be, the locking lugs on the barrel were not chamfered and were creating a burr on the leading edge when being pulled in and out of the slide grooves..this would rub on the slide and cause to much friction for the recoil spring to over come. I had a smith bevel/chamfer the lugs...never had another hiccup.
I have heard of Lacquer coated bullets building lacquer on the slide under the mag and creating drag also...this one is less likely.
New super strength mag springs pushing up on the slide and a very worn recoil spring....again, not likely but possible.
Shoot well
