Failure to Extract on Taurus 99

Flotsam

I've had a stainless PT99 for about 6 years or so - now it decides it doesn't want to extract. I've tried different magazines, but it doesn't seem to matter - also doesn't seem to matter what type of ammo I am using (although I first noticed it on Winchester Winclean ammo). I'm thinking it may be a bad extractor (maybe weak extractor spring?) The cases are partially extracted (about halfway), and then the slide gets stuck on the round in the magazine, which in turn is contacting the case still in the chamber. Any ideas?

Sam, it is probably a worn extractor/spring or it may be something as simple as some dirt or gunk under the extractor. I'd first remove it and make sure the recess is clean. If it is then relieve the extractor body a little at a time to let it close farther in. Depending on the time you have to spend on it you might be better off just replacing the extractor but there's no guarantee that a new one won't need a little adjusting as well. George

I have the same problem with my PT99. I sent it back to Taurus and they replaced the extractor and barrel. However, I took it to the range to test it and got 14 jams out of 200 rounds with FMJ ammo. Has anyone found a fix for this problem?

Success!!! I went to the range on Sunday and the owner looked at my pistol and found several burrs on the slide rails and other areas that he said were slowing down my slide. He took it back in the shop and less than 30 min. later he was back and we proceded to test it. 350 rounds later, (only 3-4 jams - user error grip) i had a great big smile on my face!!! Much better than the 14 jams in 200 rounds i had before!!! I used 115 gr. FMJ.
