Fading Serial Numbers

I noticed that the serial number on one of my frequently carried CCW pistols. which is carried close to the body in deep concealment, is starting to fade away. From a legal aspect, is this something that I need to be concerned about? And if so, what can/should I do about it?

Worst case they cant be read the, ATF will use acid to pull numbers up from base metal ;)

I called atf once to see about purchasing a 1911 pattern that had no serial numbers and they said they would try to pull them or issue them if they decided to, otherwise they would keep the frame. After hearing that I decided to decline the purchase and hassel of the whole thing. They said the gun was potential trouble if caught with it and offered to come to gun store to pick up, Yeah I bet they would come out and pick it up!

How about putting clear paint (or clear nailpolish or epoxy or motorcycle clearcoat) over the numbers.

Nail polish would probably be the best since epoxy would be too messy and paint would be too thin, and good clearcoat is hard to find.

When it starts to wear off, add more.

First test that the stuff won't be affected by cleaning solvents.

I wouldn't sweat it. If it ever came down to it, it would be easy to tell the difference between worn-down serial numbers and burnt and/or ground-down numbers. I don't think you can be charged with wearing them down over time. Not only that, the metal was permanently altered when the numbers were stamped on there and with a process the numbers can be retrieved even if completely ground off (can you tell I watch too much Discovery Channel?). And I'm willing to bet that the number is found somewhere else besides. Just my .02.
