Factory sub-sonic 9mm ammo. A few questions.
Does it exist?
If yes. Who makes it????
If not does anyone make their own?
If so could you recommend a load for me to start with.

I think every manufacturer makes a 147gr subsonic load, they are notoriously poor stoppers and can cause functioning problems in some pistols though. I'd stay away from them unless you really have a need for them.

IMI (Israeli Military Industries) makes a decent one. Check with Cole's and Widener's both import IMI ammo and have great prices by the case with free shipping. The IMI web site has a good description of this load. Check it out. I hope this helps.

DannyO,

If you want to load your own, just keep your loads under 1090-1100 FPS (speed of sound under average conditions). Knowing that, you soon see that there is a bunch of subsonic ammo out there in all kinds of calibers.

If you want a couple of decent 9mm/147 reload recipes, try 3.5 of Titegroup or 3.7 of WW231 with any decent 147 grain jacketed bullet.

With regard to them not running some guns, I would take that with a rather large grain of salt. Semiautomatic and full automatic weapons (recoil operated ones) are operated by the momentum of the bullet travelling out of the weapon. If you calculate the momentum of some typical rounds, you find the 147 loads often have MORE momentum than some of the lighter bullet/high velocity loads. Without getting too Newtonian, you can get a relative picture by multiplying the bullet's weight in grains by the velocity of the round. That will give you a figure in the six digit range most of the time. You can them compare loads in question to ascertain their momentum (relatively speaking).

Hope you got a salt shaker handy because you'll need it for a few more grains of salt. The 147 gr. 9mm tends to penetrate better than the other 9mm JHP weights. One reason for this is the momentum issue mentioned above.

Follow the link below for lottsa great info on the wounding capabilities of projectiles.

Also, here's a review from the same web site of various Gold Dot JHP ammo:

P.S. Subsonic isn't really a factor in selecting a good defensive round. The important quality to look for (in terms of wounding potential) is penetration.

I keep hearing how "bad" the 147s are. I think it's the shooters.

The Rem, Fed, Win, Speer 147s open up just fine in real people (no worse than anything else anyway), and I know more than a few PDs that are stopping just fine with it too. Wouldn't be my first choice, but it isn't as bad as some seem to think. I don't really see much difference between it and the std pressure 115/124s, and the 147s do go a tad deeper if ya might need it. Work just fine in all the pistols and smgs I've seen; the reliability issue is bogus too as far as I'm concerned.
