Very nice rifle built on the FN 98 commercial action by FN probably. FN built some with their markings and built some for Browning and others during the late '50s to the early '70s or there about. Plus they sold a lot of their actions only to be built into completed rifles by large and small builders. It is probably an 'H' ring having the left side of the inner receiver collar broached at the time the left lug raceway was broached. The 'C' ring is an earlier version and more desirable by purists as it is felt the receiver is stronger as only the right side of the rec collar is broached to provide clearance for the extractor. Does the butt plate have the FN logo? Is the FN logo engraved on the rec ring under the front scope mount? At any rate it is a super rifle barring no mechanical/ bore issues. I prefer a long action chambering in these as they generally run smoother than the blocked mag version for .308 class cartridges. Top it with some suitably classy mounts and scope and it will not be shamed in any group of classic rifles. Congrats

Looks and sounds like mine which is a .270. Mine has the FN butt plate and engraved front ring and is in like new condition. It has a peep sight- I can't bring myself to d&t through that beautiful FN logo.

From the BBGV:

* F.N.Mauser Sporter Deluxe - 24" bbl, adj sights, checkered PG stock. 1947-63

*F.N. Presentation Grade - Similar to Deluxe, except engraved with select wood.

*F.N.Supreme - 24" bbl, peep sight, checkered PG stock 1957-75

IMO, you have an FN Supreme rifle, identical to the Browning Hi-Power, and made in the same factory.

I'd agree that you own a rifle made by FNH and very similar to the Browning produced by them and also produced for Browning by Sako starting in the early '60s. I happen to have a rifle that is a near twin made by Sako (Sako High Powered Mauser) in the late '50s, just before Sako started producing rifles for Browning.

In either Browning or Sako guise, the value would be $1,000+. Congrats on a great find & purchase. I am curious as to whether it is a 22" barrel (like Brownings) or 24" barrel like the Sakos had. The Sako was not made in .308 when stamped as Sako, BTW.

thanks for the additional info everyone, very helpful...It sounds like i did pretty good for what i paid for it... i got to run a couple rounds through it today at about 120 yards off hand ( just at some large tomato cans) and every shot landed on target..going to switch out the cheap redfield for an older leupold i have to give her a more classy look...

Pilothunter...it has a 24" barrel
