F-M1D

"F" stands for fake or forgery. Last year I purchased two M1s from the CMP and one shot terribly at 100 yards (18" group). It has been rebarreled with a newer barrel (still surplus) and has a M1D scope mounting bracket attached to the barrel. From RSI a Nigerian pistol grip stock was acquired for it.

The stock required some finishing (somebody carelessly spilled some solvent on one part), but that didn't matter since there were the gaps for the connector and detachable magazines had to be filled with scraps of walnut. The cutout for the clip release was also partially filled in for a cleaner look. Afterwards, the excess wood from the filler pieces had to be sawed, filed, scraped down to match the contour of the stock. Sanding and then staining followed. The staining itself was a two day process.

Put it back together and now I have a pistol grip scoped M1 Garand ready to hit the range. After it's sighted in for both iron sights and the scope, I plan to add a compensator and BM-59 bipod. May have to cut off the bayonet lug to accomodate the latter.
