I've got the opportunity to pick up a F/A Converted Mini 14, NOT A AAC556...around 4900 bucks with a SCAR stock...good deal, bad deal, ok deal?

Not a good deal!! You can find an AC556 for about another $600. It's worth the extra money. Yes, the conversions work, but parts are going to be a problem. For now, Ruger will fix AC556's, not converted mini's. The SCAR stock costs about $500 new - but they aren't worth near that used. It also won't appreciate as much as an AC556.

I have an AC556 with the SCAR stock - the SCAR stock is nice, but I wouldn't let that wouldn't be a factor in whether I purchase an AC556 or converted Mini-14.

Who did the conversion?

If the "old" AWC did the conversion it will be first rate. The "new" AWC no longer supports these conversions done while "Doc" Dater was there.

Offer $5,500 - you never know.

I spoke to the seller, he came down on price some, threw in 5 mags, told me that the conversion was done by qualified manuf. in Oklahoma. The Ruger is a Ranch Rifle btw. I'm not that familliar with Mini 14's and will take what y'all tell me seriously.

Magazines are cheap in comparison to a full auto mini or AC556. If they aren't all factory Ruger 20rnd or 30rnd magazines, then attribute about $12/magazine. Ruger started selling factory 30 round magazines again, so prices have come down substantially. Figure on about $50 - $60 / used factory ruger 30 round mag. Also, the SCAR stock isn't cheap - I've never seen a used one, but I'd bet a used SCAR in excelent condition would sell for $400 or so.

Bottom line - don't worry about the magazines. If you are going to buy a converted Mini-14 make sure that it is at least $1,000 less than the least expensive AC556 you can find. That's just my recomendation. If it's a good conversion, then $4500 or so for the gun itself would be fair. An additional $350 would be fair for the stock.

Also, I'm assuming that you already know your CLEO will sign off on a Form 4. If you don't know this information, make sure you find it out BEFORE you make the deal.

go with the factory ac556

better to go with the factory ruger ac556. lifetime warranty!!! Can't beat that deal. If you look around and be patient you should be able to find one for under 6k easy....
