F-1 Chrony woes

I bought an F-1 (not the master) from midway a few weeks ago for load development of the 300 wsm. I took it with me to the range last week to record the performance of factory ammo as a baseline for future reference. I fired a total of 6 shots through it at distances ranging from 10-15 feet from the muzzle. I set the rifle up on the bench, removed the bolt and sighted down the bore to be sure it was 4-6 inches above the "eyes". With the help of an assistant I raised the tripod to set the bullet path at 5". All 6 shots read "Error 1".

Last night I tried it again with my 10/22. This time I left the diffusers off as it was later in the afternoon and the sky was overcast. Same results.

This morning I decided to give it one more chance. It was a bright clear blue sky morning with a few passing white clouds. I fired about 50 rounds from my 10/22 through it at ranges from 5-15 feet with and without the diffusers. The screen displayed "AL" with the flashing symbols on each side at start. Each shot flashed 00 then ERROR 1 .

Am I doing something wrong here? I have not filled out the warranty card yet because I wanted to be sure it worked before I registered it with the manufacturer. Any suggestions? mudlust.

I've used one for years without any problem, unless using it for black powder and too close to the bench.

I have read very good reports on their service and warrenty. I'd suggest that you try for a replacement. Perhaps try the store from which you purchased first, then the manufacturer.

I have had very good success with my F1, however it is picky about shot placement. It is not enough to shoot between the rods, the bullet has to pass within a 2-3 inch window directly above each sensor. If the bullet passes at an angle, only one sensor will pick up on it, and you will get an error reading. Of course, it is possible you have a defective chrono, and only one sensor is working.
