Eyewear

Contrary to the first word in my username, my eyes are anything but young. I wear contacts that make my eyesight suitable to everything I need outside of shooting, but I'm wondering if there is any type of eyewear that would make distinguishing iron sights better. Not too long ago I grabbed a pair of my mom's reading glasses just to mock being a smarta**, but noticed that they do provide a bit of magnification. Basically this is an inquiry to figure out if anyone out there has used reading glasses while shooting to gain a better sight picture. As all shooters know, any possible advantage is worth a shot! ;)

Sounds like you might need a bifocal prescription.
I wear prescription shooting glasses whenever I shoot. (Revision Sawfly with inserts) I recommend it to anyone who needs corrective lenses.

It's really tough. Farsightedness, dependent on the degree, typically allows a clear view of the target, and diminishing clarity the closer objects are to the eye... in some cases with a rifle or shotgun, the receiver sight is a blur while the barrel sight is clear or nearly clear. It can be, at best, a compromise sometimes, with variables being sight radius, sight type and sight size.

Given my "druthers", I would obtain glasses that, minimally, permit crystal clarity of the gun sights and cause the target to be a bit of a blur.

Remember that sight alignment is more critical than sight to target alignment, or sight picture, as described below.

So, you guys who use prescription shooting glasses do they have the same prescription as you regular glasses or did the Doctor give you something special for shooting?

For me (YMMV :p), the primary reason for shooting specific, prescription glasses is that I tend to angle my head down, because I'm frequently in a slightly crouched position, so I use Ranger glasses with a lower nose piece, which hold the glasses higher on my face.

The second reason is to get a prescription that is right for shooting. For example, I know a few shooters that have glasses with interchangeable lenses. Pistol and long gun prescriptions... both providing a clear front sight.

In all cases I'm talking about single vision lenses specifically for farsighted (me) individuals that need sight clarity.

I get my glasses from Leonard Maggiore... he's been doing Zeiss lensed shooting and sporting glasses and goggles for decades.

I've tried it. Drugstore/Wal-Mart generic reading glasses with a magnification of around 1.50 to 1.75 help my aging eyes if I really need accuracy. But I don't wear generic reading glasses when I'm out and about, so I don't usually wear them when practicing.

I've found that progressive lenses help me out with handgun sights and sharpen them right up just by tilting my head slightly. The sights remain in sharp focus and the target is clearer and if I used conventional bifocals.

Thanks for the insight guys. The eyewear I've been using for a couple years now are Oakley Radars with the Fire iridium lenses. They were my sunglasses for baseball but aren't shabby tint for shooting.
Right now since I'm about to have to go back to college I wont be able to experiment much with my beauties, but me and my friends get together every once and awhile and have competitions. Naturally I want to win, so heck, might as well ask. The only dumb question is the one you don't ask!
Appreciate it guys.
