Experience with Ruger .454 ?

In the next few weeks or months I may be in the market for a big bore revolver. Sorta liking what I see on Ruger web site and Super Red Hawk .454s - particularly having the .45 Long Colt ammo option.

I have have not ruled out .44 mag. or Ruger's new .480, but the .454 looks to be somewhat more versatile and is not that much more expensive in Ruger product line. I have several other handguns, do not currently reload and probably would not shoot this one a great deal. Primary purpose to be (1) plinking/practice, (2) hiking/camping in Colo. bear country, (3) possibly for infrequent feral hog hunting in Tejas.

For the sake of "compactness", I am leaning toward the 7 1/2" barrel and would likely not put a scope on the gun, at least not in the forseeable future. Comments in the next week or so will be appreciated.

454 srh

That's the exact reason to go with the SRH 454: versatility.
You can load it with "light" 200gr 45 Long Colt ammo, and proceed all the way through Buffalo Bore "heavy" 45 LC, and on to Cor-Bon's 360gr 454 @ 1500fps!
Now THAT'S a handfull to fire!
Just clean the chamber well after the shorter 45Colts to avoid ringing.

The last time I called the Kittery trading post in Maine, SuperRedHawk 71/2, listed at $595.00 for either the 44 mag or 454 Casull, For the money they are both great wheelguns, but not all people are for the heavy mag's. These are very big heavy handguns, mostly made for hunting big game, The 454 is not cheap to shoot, ammo & components are on the high side and not alot of reloading data concerning the 454, the 45LC on the other hand has many loads due to it time in the field.,I did noticed shooting the 45LC in the 454 casull they are not as accurate as the 44 mags or the 454's when it comes to grouping, in tern if you want a wheel gun that you can shoot hot heavy loads or just plinking loads at a affordable cost with plenty of reload data and components to boot the 44 mag would be the way to go for your fist heavy hitting wheel gun., Either choice you make I am sure you will enjoy every moment shooting them. Aim small hit small. RAMbo.
