Expansion of 10mm 200gr Hornady XTP at 1180fps?

I use this for a woods round. I am wanting to learn more about its self defense application.

I understand there are better options for SD. Specific to this round, at this fps, I am wondering how quickly it would expand in at center mass.

Any advise?

Thanks

Take 1/2 a dozen gallon milk jugs, fill them with water, and line them up one behind the other. Shoot them. You should find the bullet in the 4th, 5th or 6th jug, if it expanded.

The one with the highest velocity will tend to expand better in most cases.

XTP's are good bullets, but aren't known for rapid expansion. Like the above poster suggested, do a water test and see what you get.

IME that bullet is too heavily constructed for effective expansion on people.
A more appropriate choice might be the 135g and 155g JHP choices.
For people.

If you wish for just one do-all choice I most highly recommend the Winchester 175g Silvertip.

Agreed. I use that round for black bear protection. I always figured it would act too much like FMJ on people. Agreed also, on the Silver-Tip. Great round if you can find it.

I'd suggest shoot what you like, they all seem to perform well, Gold Dots seem a bit better in my tests. There are so many uncontrolled factors in SD,that determine the end results of a bullet performance. I think well placed shots owoth any given weight and design would give satisfactory results in the end. :D

+1 All my infomal testing agrees with this, it will zip along at over 1200 FPS.
