I've noticed that the 1950's circa FN (nickel jacket) FMJs in 7.92x57 expands on impact with soft soil.
I made this unusual discovery while shoveling some loose soil back to the top of my backstop. I found several expanded FMJs, all opened to an inch or better in diameter, all almost uniform in expansion.
I intentionally fired a round from my M48A into a clay bank and recovered the bullet... I was simply amazed.
Though I don't know how to post pictures, everyone is welcome to E-mail me for the picture of the expanded nickel bullet.

I am planning to cut one down the center to confirm my belief that there is a sizeable airspace behind the nose of the jacket.
Has anyone else noticed strange things such as this with foreign military ball ammunition?
