Expander Ball Flub 30-06

It looks like I got these crossed up or the dies I got had them crossed up when I got them.

Upshot was getting a set of new dies for 308 and felt the tug

30-06, no. Pulled the two dies apart that I had to reference (i.e. 270 and 30-06) and the one in the 270 was the large one and the one in the 30-06 small one.

Both measure right about their correct caliber.

Interested in any thoughts on affect of accuracy with the mistake.

I rarely reload the 270 and or I borrowed a de-cap pin so its been a long time.

I'm not sure about accuracy, but if you used a 30 cal expander in a 270 case, your 270 probably will not hold a bullet, as the neck will be too large. The 270 expander should have passed through 30 neck without touching anything.

Your 30-06 necks will probably also be too small, because the expander ball didn't size them on the way out.

There is .051" difference in length between the 270 W and the 30/06 cases. The 270 being the longest. Not sure how you could raise the ram on a 270 case with the 307 diameter sizeing plug without noticing the additional effort required to neck the case up.

Like gman said, when you lowered the ram on the 30/06 with the 270 sizer plug you should have noticed the plug did not touch anything on the way out, when you lowered the ram.

Then there is that other thing that must be most confusing for a few. The neck of the 270 case will fit 'near perfectly' into the neck of the 30/06 case.

necking the 270 to 30/06 will shorten the case, I know, there is always that question about the neck getting thicker and or thinner. My case necks get longer and or shorter.

Keeping in mind I had ot loaded rifle until recently (I did 30 years ago but...)

I can't remember when I did the last 270, its been some years.

So I could have swapped them after the 270 were loaded (last batch worked fine and were accurate as 270 gets, must be talking 3 years ago).

Somewhere in that I failed to notice the effort for the inside neck action (or resistance).

I know I was playing with lubes and maybe it was Eureka this is much better

Reality is that I have not gotten a 30 caliber expander ball for a while.

One of those oddity things more than anything, and of course embarrassing but if we don't bring those up it can possibly happen to others (not likely but possible)

PA-Joe, I believe he had the sizer plugs swapped. There is no shortage of dies around here, I believe it would be safe to say I have dies with a spread of 60 years between the newest and oldest. The RCBS boxes start with the fiber box that is lime colored, to dark green to light green plastic to dark green plastic. For me the safest thing I can do is have one box of dies out at a time.

Same for Herter dies, I went through a few yesterday checking for matched sets. I found the seater plug screwed into the sizing die and the sizing/primer punch screwed into the seating die. That happened because the threads in the top of both dies are the same. Then there is that other thing with Herter dies, Once the lock ring is screwed down to the top of the die it is not possible to identify the die.

Contact the die maker and they may send you the balls free.

I couldn't do that, I am 99.99999% sure it was my unscrew up (then screw up if you will)

Just interesting I don't know I did it and did not detect the sudden change.

And of some interest to others to watch out for.

In this case from the evidence it looks like I broke a primer pin and swapped it.

Also entirely possible the 270s were already formed and I only reloaded prepped brass (now that I think about it).

Of its possible my brother did who gave me all that stuff, not sure he gave me just the 270 dies or the 06 as well.

Just have to swap them back and we are good and see how I feel about the same restriction in back pull as the 308.
