I found some extra time to test out Silver Bear's 7.62x39 HP round.

Gun fired from: Romanian SAR-1, 2001 model
Barrel Length: 16" (stock)
Barrel Attachments: None, 'stock muzzle'
Caliber: 7.62x39 (of course  )
Range fired at 'wet-pack': 15 yds.
Cartridge type: 'Silver Bear 7.62x39, 123 gr. HP "Hunting Cartridges"
Primer Type: Berdan, Non-Corrosive
Conditions: No clouds, about 70ºF, no wind
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Comment(s): Lead core found 29" in 'wet-pack', large (main) piece of jacket found 26", small** piece of jacket found 22" in 'wet-pack'. In picture '7sb3', the main part of the jacket appears crushed in the BACK (which is the only part pictured in this one specific photo). Paper was crushed hard and deep into the back part of the jacket (notice in same photo). In picture '7sb2', you can see the 'hard rubber' insert in the base of the jacket. This was pushed slightly forward. Instead of mushrooming like expected, it very much so looks as if this round tumbled and slightly fragmented.

**small piece= 'flatter piece'. I.e. the piece w/out the rifling marks.

FWIW, Barnaul soft points seem to fragment explosively and the would profile would resemble a rugby ball in shape, and close to it in size. Nasty and good for stopping but not for hunting.

Will the Barnaul SP penetrate deep enough to hit vitals and make an exit wound in an 'average sized' person (e.g. 170lbs.)? Would you happen to have any links to any 'wound diagrams' in 7.62x39? I have been looking for some and have been unsuccessful. :(

The 7.62x39 would create an exit wound. Average fps being around 2400, the round does have some decent penetration to it. Although if you really wanna talk about wounds, that is what the 5.45 round is all about.

True to all ammo after a certain distance, comes a sharp drop in velocity. The 7.62x39 would probably not fragment in someone after around 200 yards. But bullets aren't exactly nice inthe first place!
