Expanded .22LR pic.

Okay, I was able to get to the range early this morning and conduct more 'tests.' I shot these .22LR loads at a 'wet-pack' from 30 yds. These were shot from a 21-inch rifle barrel. The top left two bullets are Remington High-Velocity 36 grain 'Golden Bullets.' They seemed to slightly over-expand. Part of the 'jacket' sheared. The top right bullet is a CCI Stinger. This round was totally sheared apart. The bottom left two bullets are Federal High velocity 36 grain HP(s). They expanded the least and penetrated the most. The bottom right two bullets are Remington 38 grain '22 Subsonics.' These were overall the best performers. They 'mushroomed' perfectly and did not over expand or shear.

(*NOTE*- Each whole cartridge of the type tested is pictured pointing at the tested bullets)

FWIW, Golden Bullets expanded perfectly when fired from a 5.5" Buckmark barrel. So bullets that expand too much from a rifle might be just right from a handgun.

Love it when someone conducts a real "meat & bones" test, and reports on it here:) (Not all of us have this kinda time on our hands ;) )

Oh yeah, what Oleg said.

(Nice photography too)

Many here that have read my views on 22LR defense ammo will know that I am partial to Remington products. I didn't quite know why until now. :D

CCI Mini Mags

I conducted similar tests with Stingers and other types of ammo from a Buck Mark 5.5 and a Beretta 21A (1.5" barrel).

I got the same results as shown above with Stingers. The round I preferred after the testing was over was the CCI Mini Mag in 40 grain. The penetration was much better than anything else including the Stingers, which sheared apart as Gewehrmutter (Mother of war?) said. The expansion was similar to the photo of the Remington 38 grain '22 Subsonics.'

Regards.

Gewehrmutter, very valuable info. Thank you.

FYI, as a supportive anecdote, I once shot Remingto Golden bullets into tin cans filled with sand. The bullets did not exit the cans. Bullets were well-mushroomed, but did not lose any jackets. They seemed to retain 100% of their weight. Distance was about 30 yards, shot from 22" barrel (?? Marlin Model 60.)

Please describe your "wet pack".

Long Path- I collect as much newspaper as possible along with 4 old phone directories, all to amount to a length of about 18 inches (before I wet it.) I tape it all together (with duct tape-- the 'real' duct tape) and soak it in my bathtub. Once all the paper is soaked up with water, I let the 'excess' drain off, put it in a plastic bag- and get to the range ASAP.
