First order of business when I got to the range was to join the NRA!! I would like to personally thank all the TFL members for their insight in showing me how severely my rights are being attacked by the anti-gun campaign. Also for making me realize how important it is to join a collective body such as the NRA, GOA, etc. Thanks again to everyone!!
Second order of business was to setup some 1" dots at 10 yards and practice targe acquisition with my P95. After 100 rounds and no 1" dots left, it was time to fire a box of ammo through the Marlin .22 bolt action at 25 yards. Although the scope has a definite advantage, there's nothing like trying to shoot small groups with iron sights. (Thank goodness for see through scope rings!) I couldn't get anything to group under an inch but it probably hasn't been cleaned in 2 years and the wind was thrashing quite a bit.
Then it was time for the big rifle so I lugged all of my cleaning supplies and my Savage .308 down to the rifle range to try out my first ever batch of neck turned brass. I fired 2 five shot clusters under .5" tall and about .75" wide--probably due to the 10-15mph crosswind. I decided to let the barrel cool off and went to feed another box through the .22 at 50 yards this time. Talked with a couple of other shooters about their rigs and then made my way back to the .308. Gave it a cleaning, fired 10 more rounds from the bench, cleaned it again, then fired the last 10 rounds prone on the grass.
Fired another 100 rounds through the pistol strong hand only and then weak hand only at 7 yards and then just had to do some more plinkin with the .22.
Five hours after arriving, I packed up and headed home. This was one of the best days at the range I can ever recall and I'm glad to have went on the 4th of July!! I AM proud to be an American!
Anyone else go shooting on the 4th?
