Is there a place on the forum where we can discuss things such as the nfl banning commercials that are pro gun, and a good standing member of society shooting an armed robber? In 10 minutes I have seen these two topics closed by staff that don't like the topic. So is there a place on here that we can go to use freedom of speech and talk about things like this? Just wondering.

Wow, passive aggressive post.

Freedom of speech is a governmental concept, not some catch-all that says you can say whatever you want wherever you want. It just means you can't be arrested for it. But this is their house and their rules.

I won't speak for the thread about the NFL ad, but I think the discussion involving the CCW holder shooting an armed robber might do much better in tactics and training with a more serious tone. If you're serious, rather than passive aggressive, PM'ing a mod with an explanation of where and why you'd like to re-open it usually helps that thread last longer.

I didn't make the post, I just noticed that they were suddenly closed. It's nice to have off topic discussions. If it needed to be moved to another section, no big deal. But closing it because it isn't your cup of tea? I'm not being ugly, I just asked if there was a place for those conversations.

To a casual observer it might look like the mods close these topics on a whim. After a while, as you become more familiar with the site you might find that they have specific criteria that must be met when posting.

If a post is made in the wrong section, it is usually moved.

If a post is considered a "drive by" and really contains nothing that shows the poster has raised an issue worthy of discussion, it is often closed. Simply making a casual comment that amounts to a link and a comment that means "News Here ...." doesn't meet this criteria.

And in most of the forum areas, the posts have to have something of value that relates to firearms. There really is not much room anywhere that is "off topic"

So yes, you really should read the Forum Rules as they are not just a rehash of every other sites' rules.

It's nice to have off topic discussions.

The people who provide this forum want for it to be a firearms forum. We are their guests and we follow their rules. One of the threads you mentioned was closed with the comment that it was about "the politics and economics of professional sports" and the other was more about societal changes than about firearms. There are places to discuss such subjects, but TFL isn't that place. It is for firearms, and off-subject threads are routinely closed. It is, in many people's opinion, one of the better firearm forums precisely because off-topic discussions are limited, along with other inappropriate comments and references.

Even though I’ve had my hand slapped a few times I agree this is by a far one of the best moderated forums I visit. I think the moderators are open to discussing various issues with you, but prefer it be handled via PMs instead of the open forum.

This thread should probably be under "Site Questions and Tech Support". There are rules and they are actually pretty well laid out. I have found the moderators to be pretty fair in how they close threads, give warnings, etc.

I'm BAAAACKK!

The NFL thread I saw went off to discuss football politics in general. That closed it - as stated above.

It is also the case, as stated above, a PM to a moderator will lead to an explanation of the action.

The answer to the question of where to discuss something that we deem not relevant is that there a myriad of forums and outlets in social media.

Freedom of speech - that implies the poster doesn't understand the Constitutional implication of the 1st Amendment. You have the freedom to start and pay for your own outlet.

Closed.
