Ever hear of "Simunition"

I'm holding in my hand a strange bullet. It is a 9mm round but is totally made of plastic except it has a metal primer. The "bullet" is a blue sphere which essentially works like a paint ball when it hits you. It is called "simunition" (sp)and is used in real weapons configured to fire it. I've seen Glock and S&W pieces. It is used to train LEO and simulates "real" fireing situations. While in a dimly lit room at the range, you wander through and an "assaliant" whips out his gun or charges you with a knife and screams he's going to kill you! You have only a split second to yank your gun and fire. Yes, you actually fire at eachother! Now maybe you've all heard about this stuff but I found it amazing. Anyone hear about these before?

Yep, Air Force Security cops use them for training too. On TDY a couple years back I was poking around a closed building at an air base that was used for dynamic entry training. Paint all over the place and lots of empty plastic simuniton cartridges and a couple of "live" sim rounds. I still have them floating around the house somewhere.

Cool. Actually, I don't want to sound flip about this important training technique but I was really impressed with them. My brother and I are at the range so much that we've been invited to try it sometime with some of the officers who train there. Maybe they need fresh meat! I guess we'll try it soon enough. I'll report to you all after I've embarassed myself!

I heard of them.

I try to train with Simunitions once a month. It brings your training to a different level. Potential threats are moving and responding to your verbal interactions and movements. Can't get that with paper.

It also lets you know when you messed up, because they do sting. But remember just because you got stung doesn't mean you're down and out. Stay in and keep fighting till you're at a safe point or the threat/s is/are down.

Helps you realize you got to keep moving.

I think they're a really good training aid.

Does this have to be specially sanctioned ? Or could this type of load be a recreational alternative to paintball ? How much do the bullets cost ?

Simunition is sold to law enforcement, military, professional security forces, and limited civilian training groups only. Simuntion F/X is $.50 per round. It is not reloadable.

Take'em up on the offer, Rome, it'll be the time of your life and you'll never forget it. Fresh meat....yep! I used a converted Barretta each of the times I did the Advanced Tactics Course at Front Sight. Advise: Wear full protection, I've seen a few guys that went in with bare arms and came out with some nasty flesh wounds. Bet they still got scars. Now that's gotta hurt :)

Thanks, Everyone! Yeah, I'll give this a shot (no pun intended). Speaking of that, did you ever notice just how many "shooting metaphors" there are out there? e.g. "Loaded for bear", "Don't give them any ammunition...", "keep your powder dry", "standing ramrod straight", etc., etc. In my humble opinion, firearms have been so much a part of our history and lives that they have been completely melded into our language. :) Too bad the vast majority of the "unwashed" out there have no idea what many of them mean. :(

Thanx to all.

Someday I'd like to try doing simunition-style training with airsoft guns. It wouldn't be as realistic, of course, but it would be a lot cheaper.

Simunition was used plenty while I was in the Marine Corps. We used it in our M16A2's and our Beretta's. Great pracice round, as it stings a bit. Used them in MOUT (military
operation urban terrain) training, and on air-craft carriers as well.
