Ethics in posting?

The subject has been brought up before, I can't remember if any official policies or at least a concensus has been reached.

Specifically, what I am curious about is, is there such a thing as posting information that might be too dangerous for the public? For example, we all agree that talking about home made bombs might not be kosher right? What about police and SWAT tactics? There's more, but I can't think of them right now.

As a rule, I try to make sure everything I say is somehow related to self defense, but I guess I'm curious what you folk think about this issue. Am I being too paranoid? Should I be more careful? Or am I on the money?

The old common sense method is best. We know what to say and what to leave out. General discussion is about almost anything but keeping firearms (or firearm related) in the topic is the general idea.--------------- Did I get that right?

SB - You've been around a while, and I'm sure you've seen posts that fall on both sides of the acceptable/unacceptable line. Your own good common sense should guide you. The Forum Policies that every member has agreed to, are linked at the top of the page. These give a general overview of what is and is not acceptable.

The policies are general in nature and, therefore, open to interpretation by each individual member. Of course, identical words can have different meanings to different people. This is where there can be problems, and this is where staff comes in.

The best advice that I have received from the administrators of this site are these:
1. Think Twice, Post Once. (TTPO)
2. Take The High Road. (TTHR)

If any other members or staff would care to add to what I have stated, for further clarification, please do so.

As usual, TheBluesMan states my thoughts exactly, and probably more concisely than I would've.

Our Forum Polices, linked at the top of every page, gives a basic guideline, but also makes clear that we like to see common sense used. This is why we have Rule 4: Any rule can be danced around, so we do leave it up to the discretion of the Staff to moderate imflamatory or dangerous discussion. This, of course, immediately brings up free speech issues.

Good rule of thumb-- You don't want to see your post get pruned, then:

don't post instructions for illegal activities.
Don't EVER threaten.

Discussions of tactics aren't a big deal, because of the medium. There's not a whole lot to be learned over this medium of communication, where tactics are concerned. I personally discourage serious tactical training taking place here NOT because of fear of how it will be used, but out of fear that it will be taught and learned incorrectly. If you're serious about learning good tactics, by all means, take a good training course. We could put you on to a few. But you don't know who you're talking to over this medium, and you don't know if you've learned it right. Nothing takes the place of REAL training. :)

Post on, and post safely! ;)

YOYOW! You Own Your Own Words! I can't stress that enough...especially on the Internet. Remember, this is a public forum that anyone can read. Because of that, anything you write can (and probably will) be archived for later use. Newer search engines (check out http://www.google.com/ for an example) cache Web pages (like these) so, even if you delete them, you'll be preserved forever.

Things that I've said in public forums in the past...years ago...have come back to haunt me. Let's just say that in my younger days (age 13 or 14) I was quite the computer "enthusiast" and the FBI took an interest in my activities. It wasn't until years later (age 18 or 19) that my online handle was linked to activities in the past because of posts I had made in a public forum.

Eventually the FBI's interest waned and my handle has been "clear" for many years, but I'm still cautious of what I post. I know it can come back to haunt...

As far as ethics go, keep it legal and defensive. Lame posts I had made when I was 15 threatening to "take down" a certain rather important computer system were quoted in a related case when I was 20...two years after I had stopped any "questionable" computer activities. I'm now 23 and still get the occasional email to an old address asking me about hacking because someone has dug up an old post of mine.

SB,
You and I have pretty much been around since the inception of TFL. (When I posted as Hal). Shoot, I even remember when a prize was given for the topic that gathered the most responses! Now, threads are closed because they get too long, and sometimes go into triple overtime. Nostalgia comes pretty quick in cyber time, huh? Let the buyer beware, should apply. If a deal, or a poster seems too good to be true,,,,,
Best watch what you say at all times. Keep in mind the medium also. I mean, think about it. How many people on TFL have you, or anyone else met face to face? And even then, keep in mind the FBI was shooting with Dave at Waco. Hehe, for all any of us know, the guy we know as Rich L, may be a screen persona for Janet Reno ;). I know, absurd, but used to show a point.

If this forum were directed at gun control, rather than pro 2nd, would you post "Guns are Great!!! Everybody get one!!" or "Ohhhh, guns is evil, get rid of them" to gain acceptance? IMHO, the friendly threads, were poeple let their guard down, hold the most potential for propaganda. Day after day, I am amazed at how lax so many tactical people are.

So I might post sm-th about a friend being undertrained so as to get help for him...except that can be used as propaganda against us?

Oleg,
Yes it does when the responses contain reference to sedition, violation of federal law, condoning a felony, disregard for the other 9 BOR amendments, a call for mob violence and so on. Ships are not the only thing loose lips sink. YOUR KGB uses brute force. OUR KGB seldom uses such gosh means. OUR KGB has been working to perfect the more flys by honey route of the sting.
