ER Shaw MK VII Rifle

Thinking about pulling the trigger on a .280Rem left hand model in SS, Fluted 24" bbl, and laminate stock. They use the Savage Action with Accutrigger and is priced just north of a grand. Was looking at a Rem 700 Custom, but the tag was almost 2 grand. Any thoughts?

I hate the safety and think Savage actions are hideous.

Otherwise... it should be a good rifle.

I was really close to ordering one a few years ago. ...But I couldn't get past the looks or the safety.

I have not used one of E.R. Shaws's guns, but I do know they are reputable company and should deliver a fine product. I have held one of their sample rifles at their shop, it's near Pittsburgh and is only 30 minutes from my house, and they felt and looked pretty nice.

I for one love Savage actions, and I thnk they are an amazing way to start building a custom gun. If you buy one, you shouldn't be dissapointed. Savage actions are pretty nice. Let us know what you end up doing!

Good gun but 12 - 14 month wait??? No way, all they are doing is bolting there barrel to a Savage action and putting it in a Boyds stock. Nothing special, shouldn't take that long. You can get a gunsmith to order one of there barrels get you a donor rifle for the action, order a Boyds stock, put it together and you have the same gun in a fraction of the time.

Heck, you can get all that, barrel nut wrench, make a vice and a set of go/no go gauges and do it in your garage for even less.

From #1 Savage fan...
I have a Shaw barrel on my 7-08- it's good (3/4 minute)...but not as good as the CBI barrel in .260 (1/2 minute).

What Salty said...
Just build exactly what you want. Action, precision lug, action wrench, and barrel from Jim at Northland Shooters Supply.

He's showing Model 111 long actions with AccuTrigger for $350.
The .280 Rem is not a popular chambering so I doubt he'd stock it, but they are available. The CBI barrels run about $300 with different contours available. You can also go for the Shaw barrel for $200- but Gun Shack too, does not show them in stock:

For the .280, pretty safe bet you are going to have to wait a bit to for the barrel, but that already seemed to be OK with you.

Building your own Savage is simple and fun- and you get it the way you want it out of the gate rather than a "factory" rifle you end up needing to spend more dough on to customize.

Thanks FrankenMauser

I didn't much like the Savage actions until I bought a LH Weather Warrior in 260. Shoots 100gr Partitions into .3", 120s into .5", and 129 Interlocks into .6". I don't mind the wait for a .280. I gave my youngest a Mark X with an ER Shaw barrel in 280. Shoots .5" - .75" with 140s, 145s, 150s, and 160s.

I have never had great luck with ER Shaw barrels. I honestly do not know how their "custom" rifles would shoot if they build them with their barrels.

Say what you want to about Savage rifles

But the worst Savage I ever owned was better than the best Remington.

Criterion barrels are good in my opinion (I only have one and it is a real winner). What will you use the rifle for? F class? Or medium/large game hunting? 1 moa accuracy is way good for the hunting application.

My buddy has a Shaw rifle in 300 Win. He's a pretty good shot and he can shoot holes touching at 100 with it. I haven't seen it shoot any further than that though. I got my 243 Win Tikka re-done by them after and it shoots better than I can. I got a 16" heavy barrel on it. They have specials on their website now. I paid a lot more than they're showing on the specials.

OK, I'll wade into this mess.

I build custom rifles for a living (for what that's worth), so I buy a few barrels. ER Shaw barrels are OK, but just OK, and for the price you can get a much, much better barrel. X-Caliber, Shilen, Douglas, heck even Green Mountain is better than ER Shaw IMO.

Savage rifles are ugly and look like they are built out of spare plumbing parts, but they shoot very well. My main gripe against a Savage is the stamped sheet metal trigger assembly. But like I said, they shoot well. I prefer Remington actions for a build because I like the looks better, but either a Savage or Remington will shoot about the same with the same quality barrel on them.

So, my advice, find an action you like and put a good barrel on it. Then shoot it.

I have a couple ER Shaw rifle barrels and if I'm doing my part the shoot pretty well usually around MOA. However, my Lilja, Pac-Nor, and McGowen barrels I have all shoot a little better. The important thing to me is that these other barrels don't foul as rapidly and the clean up faster. To me that's more important than the accuracy differences.

Oh I see. The savage shank is actually undersized to the receiver face when you use the nut. If you rebarrel without the nut the barrel will be flush against the face of the receiver. So instead of a ~1" diameter barrel over the chamber you'll have a ~1.2" diameter. It might not seem like a lot but it goes a long way.

OP I see you are in Alabama...I'm not sure where Helena is in reference to Athens AL. You really need to give Tooter Meredith @ Meredith Rifles a call. He is in Athens AL he will be able to give you a very high quality rifle for a very reasonable price. He has a 1/2 MOA guarantee.

I have personally seen 15-20 of his rifles shoot and they are all easily 1/2 MOA for 5 shots at 100yds. I own one also. There is a long range class this weekend local to me and of the 20 shooters 18 of them will be shooting Meredith Rifles...that says enough

ER shaw rifle from an owner

I first saw this rifle in a guns and ammo review. I have several custom rifles, along with several weatherby's, Sako's, Winchester's,Brownings, Nosler Customs, and a few Remingtons. Ok buying based on a review not the smartest thing granted.I agree I've not been a fan of that particular action its the only one I own. That being said the action has been modified and is not stock. ER shaw had had it modified with proprietary changes. This action screws right to the the barrel for one.The gun took very little time to arrive at my dealer. When the rifle arrives you get a data sheet with the following.
date 9/28
Gauge bore OK
work done on bolt: reciever face, bold face, bolt body I.D. polished, feed ramp polished, locking lugs lapped barrel fitted and test fired. gunsmith initials Each gun smith has a separate job it seems.

Not bad for my kick around hunter for the cost of the off the shelf rifles, and in a caliber, barrel flutting of my choice (nice spiral flutes), nice nutmeg stock of my choosing. Has killed multiple African Game and my 67.5 in alaskan moose.
