Engraving a Rem 1100 for x-mas.

My father in law would like to pass his 1100 to my son for x-mas as a way to be remembered. It is not worth much so an expensive engraving would be silly.
I am not worried about resale.

I would like to take a high speed dremmel tool and simply put "To Jack from Opi"

Has anyone done this or have any advice on bits...speed?

I can disaster written all over that. Try doing it on a scap piece of metal first. I have done it on a pair of scissors, and it wasn't pretty. I might check with a jeweler or trophy shop. Mark

More than one way to skin this cat.

Regardless of the condition of the 1100, I would not attempt to do this work, with a hand-held Dremmel. I feel that you would not enhance it's appearance at all and not be happy with the results. Instead I wold try one of two options, if indeed they are available to you.

1) There are shop/stores that do engravings on trophys and nameplates. These are done on a machine and look pretty good. ... :)

2) Jewelers also perform this work, all the time.

Both options would not cost you much and you will be happier with the results. .. ;)

I once bought a Marlin 336, that was presented to a retiree by his shipmates off an Ore Hauler, on the Greatlakes. I hope the old-boy got a chance to use it... .... :)

Be Safe !!!

I should mention that I am pretty good at this kind of work. I will practice on a piece of steel and see how it looks. Good advice.
This is the equivalent of writing "Andy" on Woody's boot. It's sentimental.
I will print out the font on paper and then cut through to the metal with the tool.

Pahoo, as usual, makes much sense.

FWIW, I have several guns passed to me that I will pass on. Some from relatives back in the late 1800's.

They are all engraved under the buttplate.

If this sounds appropriate, just make sure to engrave small and leave room for when your son wants to pass it to his relation.

Including dates kinda makes for a nice ongoing history of the gun.

A nice touch is an engraved grip cap on the butt stock. And, in the old days many presentation guns had engraved plates set in the stock. Think outside the box, the sentiment doesn't have to be limited to receiver engraving.

I am very happy. My father in-law wants to be remembered...
If the gun was more unique or valuable, I might have hidden the engraving.

My compliments !!!

Looks better than I thought it would. Not only that, but it means more because it was you who did the work. .... :D

I daresay the boy liked it:)
I am a little concerned about the rust. I will treat it somehow after x-mas.
