Engine degreaser vs 60 yr old blue

I doubt it but for safty sake perhaps try a very small amount under the stock were it won't show and see.
 
Use mineral spirits and you won't have to worry one way or the other. Mind you, degreasers are just that. They remove grease. However, if the label says it removes rust, don't use it on a blued finish. Neither a grease remover nor a rust remover will bother chrome.
 
I used to use the ZEP red degreaser pilfered from work to combat cosmoline. It worked like a charm, but will tear your skin a new one if it gets on you. And I'm sure it would do a number on shellac finishes, but you should just stick with mineral spirits and heat for the stock anyways.
