friend at work has the no.5 jungle carbine, when he received it from his father it did not have the magazine.i see no.4 mags on GB will these interchange?

yes,,,,and, no
enfield mags were hand fitted to the gun.
the tolerances are not that tight, so you might get an original or repro mag to fit and function, or.....
it's not hard to "adjust" the mag for your gun.
just remember, many no5 mk1 have bores that are pretty much shot out. they were used in multiple 3rd world conflicts, and originals are few and far between.
but a classic rifle!

Pretty much yes, but you may need to fiddle with the lips a bit for really good feeding.
#1, frequently called "SMLE", or "#3" & earlier models will not though, the rear rib is different.
The Indian magazines can be a big problem & the Indian 7.62 are a definite no-go.

Stay away from the aftermarket mags like Pro Mag, they do not function. Odds are a No4 mag well feed fine in your No5 rifle. I've owned dozens of these rifle and swapping mags is very seldom a problem. If the mag functions in one rifle it should function in all rifles, if it doesn't look for wear on the end of the mag release.

Try Springfield Sporters for a replacement mag. I had to get one for my second #5mk1, and it works fine.
