I have an old Enfield rifle i am going to re-barrell. I was'nt going back with the .303 chambering. The rifles' action and stock are in good shape, but the barrell is wore out. Model and type is unknown. Looks like a mkv, but not sure. I am going to keep it within .303 chamber pressures, what ever it may be. I was thinking turning into a .30-30 Win, or maybe a .454 casull. Any thoughts? I also handload my own ammo ,so a wildcat is'nt out of the question.

.30-30 and .30-40 would both work fine. Converting to a rimless round (.308 for example) would involve both magazine and extractor/ejector problems, but could be done as long as you reloaded and kept pressures low.

There have been several wildcats on the .303 case, mostly in Canada, so those would work fine as would .303 necked to a .30 bullet.

I am not sure how much the job might cost, as I don't know of any pre-threaded barrels for those rifles.

I believe I've seen reconditioned Lee-Enfields being sold that were chambered in 45-70. If you could find out more about those actions...

"...Model and type is unknown..." Where is the rear sight? Does the mag have one locking lug on the back or two?
If you opt to re-barrel, you're looking at a custom made barrel, magazine, bolt head and extractor as a minimum. Going to a pistol cartridge will require a completely new design for the mag and feeding ramp.

I was just out enjoying my No.4 Mk II chambered in .444 marlin today at the range.

The loads were 47 grains of IMR4198 I believe and 240 grain remington bullets. This is a standard lever gun load. I believe there is some room for playing here.

All I can say is, remove the brass buttplate and replace it with something softer!

50 rounds later my shoulder feels like a melon, while my buddy shot a .300 win mag as many times and wasn't feeling a thing on account of his recoil pad.

Anyways, If you want something different, it's a pretty simple conversion.
