Enfield Action

That's an odd choice of an action for that cartridge. Could you tell a little more about what you have in mind?
 
Well they have been converted to 45-70 so what is another off the wall conversion? I just hope the feasability has been calculated...
 
No flame intended Tom2. Its just that the difference between the two cartridges (303 /7.62x39) would make for a difficult conversion. There's no doubt that it could be done, but other actions would take a lot less work.
The 45-70 is a very good cartridge for the Enfield action.

Wanted the Enfield action for two reasons.

First is the detachable mag, second is the .311 barrels I allready have that I will shorten and rechamber, have two so one for practice and one for real.

Planning to use an ak mag addapted to the enfield.

Lots of aftermarket composit stocks and scope mounts.

If you are refering to the Model 17 or Model 14 Enfield their actions are totally unsuited for the 7.62X39 cartridge! Even the 45-70 and a detatchable magazine - I just don't see the possibility!
A-Square used those actions (the P17) to build rifles up to and including the 577 Tyranosaur!. Doc and I built a 495A-Square on one.
I think you should go back to the "drawing board" and select another action like a Sako AII action or a mini mauser!
Ruger already makes exactly what yu want in the Mini-Thirty! It, of course is already in 7.62X39. Velocity out of that round operating at 50,000 CUP get at most 2500 FPS! By using the Enfiels 17 or 14 action you couldn't go hardly above the 50,000CUP limit!
Not to irritate you, but I'd make another choice - it will cost you a fortune! And, if you're refering to the SMLE no.4 action I think the conversion would still cost a fortune if even possible.

MKno4 should be just right.

I've already built a rifle on this action in 45acp, worked great.

Have a friend who will do the work on the barrel for trade, and as I said I have two barrels to start with.

I plan to continue the barrel threads about one inch, this will give me room to rechamber in 7.62x39. Was going to make a savage style lock ring from part of the receiver stub that is on the second barrel, that will make headspacing easy

Should be able to make the extractor reach the case rim with a little work.

I think the mag adaption will be the most interesting part.

I've looked at both the ruger and the cz bolt gun but they use the 308 barrel

I wanted a .311 barrel for a .311 bullet, and with both these pieces being about $500, I think I can spend the difference on the bolt and small parts.

I still have the mkIII that I killed my first deer with, and that was about 45 years ago.

I am looking for parts for a Enfield No.1 Mark 3 .308 I have alot to get all I have is a barrel and recever anyone know where I can start looking
 
I am trying to start collecting them I like the older stuff more. then this new stuff don't take me wrong I have a a couple new things but the older stuff is more of a challange to find and put together
 
"...will shorten and rechamber..." A .303 British case is 2.222" long. A 7.62 x 39 is 1.524" long. .698" difference. You won't have enough shank to re-thread. Not all Lee-Enfield barrels are .311" either. They vary between that and .315". Shot out barrels are larger than .315".
Plus 95 thou difference in case head diameter. One being rimmed and the other not. That adds major modifications to the bolt head.
The mag follower will need modifications too. The follower is designed for a rimmed cartridge too. The OAL of a .303 is 3" plus. 2.930" for the 7.62. 70 thou difference.
.303british.com covers everything related to the Lee-Enfield and the cartridge. Not just No. 1 Mk. III's.
 
Gunparts has Ishapore parts. Listed under SMLE No. 2A Mk III Ishapore. You'll need a handful of bolt heads, at $11.90 each, to try with proper guages to get the headspace right. Building a milsurp isn't an inexpensive project.
 
that an't no lie there.. I thought I would try and get into it for the fun of it.. or for a hobbie. its project no. 2. i thought about starting another one up while I work on the other 2.. and thanx I will look there
