Enfield .308?

I saw an Indian Enfield .308 in a recent Shotgun News for $89.99. Does anyone have one of these and if so is it worth the money.

Its probably an Ishapore Enfield. The orginal design is .303 British, and India converted the design to .308 as a stop gap until they could make/buy a more modern battle rifle. Some report some FTF issues since the .303 is rimmed and the .308 is not.

I have no idea if that is a good buy or not. Some would say any rifle that shoots straight for under $100 is a good deal.

I would keep looking. You should be able to find a MKII No.4 in .303 British for about that price. The Ishie's also have problems with broken extractors.

The Ishipores are not conversions of existing guns. They where made from the ground up as a .308. Also they were never a stop gap invention until they could get better rifles, the army already had the Indian version of the FAL. The Ishipore was used mostly by police and rear units.

I have one, I like it. It isn't pretty, but it is under $100 and it shoots well enough, and is chambered in a very common cartridge. I have never had any thing break on mine yet, and I have never had any failures to feed except for one really badly mishapped CAVIM surplus round. I blame the ammo for that one.

Supposedly these rifles have the best metelurgy (sp?) of any of the Enfields.

The biggest advantage of the British .303 MkIV is that it has a better rear sight (peep) as opposed to the Ishipore which has a shallow V type notch. I like them both.

If you want a .308 get the Ishipore, if you want better sights get the Brit. They are both great values.

I've got one that I paid about the same for a year ago. Inexpensive to fire, large mag cap considering it's a bolt action, and accurate enough for plinking. Feeding is not 100% reliable (have to check that out) but it makes a nice addition to the collection and is a very tough rifle.
