End of the Browning Hi-Power?

Over the last month I have heard some conflicting stories about Browing. One version has it that Browning will no longer be producing the famed Hi-Power anymore. The other version has it that Browning has simply chosen not to produce the Hi-Power this year in order to clear an overstock of these pistols. Which is true? After Colts announcement I truly hope that another great firearms company isn't going to fall to the tremendous number of frivilous lawsuits by the anti-gun crowd.

Browning / FN is in the process of introducing some new & exciting pistols which seem to have a lot of promise to them. My understanding is that since they still have a number of Hi-Powers in stock, they are going to be concentrating on their new line with the hope that it will take off since it is based on the hi-power design but incorporates a whole bunch of new features.

The Hi-Power is listed in the current Browning catalog. The issue seems to be one of too many pistols sitting on the shelves. Once consumer demand depletes this supply, more will be imported. However, the rub is how many and for how long. Browning faces the problem every businessman does with regards to having stuff people want to buy. The Hi-Power is a cult favorite in the U.S. While the pistol is seen everywhere overseas, it is an acquired taste here. BTW, Fabrique Nationale (FN) manufactures the Hi-Power in Europe. Browning is the authorized importer and distributor in the U.S. I suspect that should Browning eventually drop the Hi-Power FN may seek another distributor here. But, of course, it depends upon whether people want to buy the pistol. With all the Glocks, Sigs, HKs, Rugers, S&Ws, Kahrs, and CZs out there the competition is stiff. Of course, anyone on TFL who has the $$$$$$$ can approach FN about selling the pistol in the U.S. if Browning will not.

FN did not produce the HP for Browning in 1999. The SHOT Show reports have the full story, but a full production run is scheduled for 2000. Colt still makes guns too.

Trevor,

In 1977 FN bought Browning Arms Co., so I think any decision about terminating the importation of the HiPower to the U.S. would come from FN, not Browning. I also question if Browning can "...drop the Hi-Power..." without FN's support and agreement.

I hope that is real. I would buy one. It looks like it would be a nice addition.
