You can thank the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and their work with several Eastern states' game departments for the sudden appearance of elk in states where they were wiped out 200 years ago. They are not the same species of elk that once lived there, rather they are Rocky Mountain Elk, most of them from states where elk are becoming a nuisance animal in agricultural areas. Kentucky, Michigan, South Dakota, Pennsylvania, and a few other states got token populations.

Elk have thrived where pre-planning was well thought out and many contingencies were covered. Pennsylvania held its first elk season a few years ago. Since then, each successive year has meant even more coveted licenses issued. Population growth and cont'd management are studied by wildlife biologists.
In contrast, Arkansas released elk within miles of large alfalfa farms. Many elk departed the planned forest home to take up residence on or near private land. Crop damage has been considerable.
Kentucky "planted" elk in wilderness areas. Its a fair bet that Kentucky's elk will mirror Pennsylvania's success.
Many breeding pairs were transported to Sioux Reservations in South Dakota. Tribal councils set hunt prices and other factors. Elk herds seem to be thriving. In 2001, I hunted Lower Brule and took a fine 5 X 5 bull.
