Elk Hunting with a canine companion?

Hello All,

In October, I'm going to go for a 7-9 day Elk hunt in Oregon. I'd like to bring my yellow lab with me. I'm not thinking of her as a method of hunting, rather she's just a great companion to have on the trail.

My question is whether this is a mistake. Will I likely be sorry when/if the opportunity presents itself. She's well trained, and responds to voice and silent whistle commands perfectly well. There may be a legal issue, but I'm not aware of that at this time.

Thanks.

In Oregon, hunting elk with dogs is a no-no. Sure, you could try to convince the warden she's just along for a walk, but I don't know if he'd buy it.

Hmmm,, Poor choice. You will smell like dog and well, the dog will smell like dog. Elk don't like this.

Fido been around rifle shooting much? He might bolt into the bush if and when you get a shot. Mind you, Scorch pretty much says it all. I'd leave Fido at home.

That's what I needed to know. Getting busted by scent is one thing, but getting busted by law makes it an easy decision.

Thanks All!

Thats a bummer. I'd like the idea of having a dog around, especially at night. Dogs have excellent night vision and excellent scent. If there are any 4 legged or 2 legged creatures lurking about your camp site, you will know in a hurry. Are there bears in the area you are hunting? I'd much rather wake up to dog barking at a bear, than having the bear come through my tent. I would really appeal that law if possible.

Sportsmanship is one thing, but safety is another.

I hunted with an old friend in Colorado 3 years ago and he always has his old dog along. He kept a muzzle on her for courtesy to other hunters. He has lots of wall space filled!
I would give the area CO a little credit on being able to figure out the difference between a pet and a working dog.
