Planing an elk hunt any thoughts on the best bullet? I shoot a jap 7.7, Russian 7.62-54 and a8mm Mauser plan to load 180 gr. but not sure about bullet type, spitzer or round nose? Never hunted elk before so I'm on uncertain ground, any thoughts?
I would think a spitzer would be best. The cartridges you picked are fine but not exactly speed demons.A round nose would would have a little less range and I don't know that you would gain much with modern bullet designs.Get you some Nosler Partitions if the caliber is available. That's about as good as it gets.
I did have American rifles but they were stolen a few years back and this was a inexpencive way to rebuild the arsonal, all have good actions and the jap is one of the strongest out there, I like the long rifles.
I'm reloading ,I enjoy it and with the jap it's the only way to go, I can't handle thoes Norma prices even if you can find it. Realy liked my 30.06 and the jap is real close in fact you can cut down a .06 case and reload it to the jap 7.7 and the 7.62-54 takes vertually the the same charge as the jap. just slitly more punch with the 8mm.
Personally I'd use the 8mm Mauser and look for 175-200 grain bullets. Spitzers or Round nose will work just fine on an elk. Spitzers will retain energy and velocity better over longer ranges but the round nose should be plenty good out to 2-300 yards.
i would also recomend the 8mm i know a guy that shot a nice bull elk with his czech mauser with a 175grn bullet droped it like a ten ton sack of dog do-do ive killed 3 pigs a deer and an antelope with my K98 the also didnt take a step (lol actualy they both did cartwheels lol) so yeah use your 8mm
