EFMJ v HS v Silvertip

In the FBI test series the 115 Silvertip averaged 11.5/.54

The 124 HS did 14/.49, the 147 HS 17/.50

The 124 +P EFMJ did 10.66/.54 in the stuff I saw.

This is progress? Maybe they were using/aiming at the INS/BP specs? :)

BrokenArrow,
Federal's EFMJ feeds as flawlessly as any FMJ round, and is Legal in States like New Jersey where Hollow Points are illegal. I've been waiting for a legal round like this to replace the FMJs in my home defense guns for a long time. So yes, I would say this IS progress.

I've had a 9 mm Colt Combat Commander lightly worked over, that would feed nothing but hardball ( this was the second 9 mm Commander I had and got rid of with this problem ) that spent several years of sitting in the closet. I finally sold it and promptly heard of the efmj ammo. arrrghhh !^*%^#@*

You can use hollow points in your home/business in NJ AFAIK. NJ can always change the law to ban "expanding" or "soft point" ammo (Fed calls it a "controlled soft point" too BTW; what the CSP means in the product number) and you are back where ya started?

I've shot the 9mm EFMJ from, through, into a whole bunch of stuff. It would not be my first choice unless it and FMJ were my only two choices. The 124 9mm at 1105 fps (BHP/92FS) anyway. The 40/45 loads may be better.

It is better than FMJ, but not JHPs. Too many seem to think EFMJ is the long awaited "Excaliber". :)

BrokenArrow, just curious what you think are the best 9mm hollowpoints? what type of JHP and weight do you find works the best from all your tests you've done?

BrokenArrow, why can't EFMJ be the long awaited 'super' bullet? What is wrong with the stuff? I've not heard anything negative yet. You said you shot it into things but didn't explain why you thought Hollow-Points were superior.

We all knew that other types had problmes. FMJ overpenetrated, Hollow Point is sensative to clogging, Soft Points don't reliably expand, and pre-fragmented slugs underpenetrate. The EFMJ solves all of these problems and feeds reliably also.

I believe there can be a 'near-perfect' bullet that will be as good as it is likely to get for the near term. Before the 'ban' I shot lots of Black Talon. I believed that was really good, better than any other hollow-point of its time. Remember that nay-sayers spoke badly of hollow-points when they came out too.

John Browning made us equal.

Without Browning, we might not know about the other two...

My picks are the 124 +Ps. The GS has looked the best in my informal tests, and the results from formal tests I've seen too. By best, I mean reliably pens/exps enough from different guns through barriers.

EFMJ 124 +P never got bigger than .55, never smaller than .50. The GS 124 +P never got smaller than .50 either, but got up to .67 and always went as deep/deeper than the EFMJ.

Into jugs of water after 4-8 layers of denim/heavy bath towels:

124 EFMJ +P (124/1105) 3/.53
124 HS +P+ (124/1211) 3/.55-.62
124 GD +P (124/1266) 5/.49-.55
124 +P GS (124/1180) 4-5/.60-65

So, if I have a choice between something that will always do .55 but be a little short on pen sometimes (avg 10.66), or something that will consistently pen farther (avg 13-17) and has a very good chance of getting bigger too, I'll pick the latter. YMMV.

I see your logic, but I'll still disagree here. I think that if you want more penetration, you simply redesign the cavity smaller or jacket thicker. I'm of the opinion that 14" is optimum. As for me, I'd rather have a consistant shot-to-shot performance that I can count on. I also want the round to dump ALL of its energy on the target. If it HAS to go through, then I want a big exit wound.

I'd rather have the .40 or .45 to be sure, but a 9mm that will give reliable 11" penetration satisfies me. A dose of reality here... how often does 11" fall short of vital organs?

How often does 11" of gelatin mean 11" in people? Quite a few rounds that do 14" or over are not coming out the other side most of the time. The sternum/ribs, arms can take a few inches off that.

The Silvertip avgs an inch more (11.5) and that was a bit short in Miami. Don't know if deeper would have really made any difference, but it would not have hurt any either?

I still don't see any reason to choose it over the better +P JHPs unless you have to.
It does what it does more reliably, but what it does doesn't beat what the others do reliably enough for me.
