Education is the key to our gun rights

Many people oppose the right to gun ownership and laws that restrict certain types of guns from being legally owned. I believe that they do this out of ignorance not malice. We as gun owners and enthusiasts are educated on guns and their role in right and wrong. We take for granted that everyone in America and this is a rather large country, has the same background and education on firearms that we do. Most of us, gun owners and enthusiast grew up in a home where there were guns. Most of us hunted or had a BB gun growing up...something that sparked our interest in guns. What we fail to realize is that we as many of us as there are, are a minority in the country. Believe it or not, the average American household has one less gun that it does a coffee pot, iron, vacum cleaner or dishwasher. Guns are not like televisions, they are not in every home. People fear what they do not know. I just said that there are more televisions in American homes than there are guns right. I am a cop. Have you ever watched a television series with a law enforcement theme. If so, on average have you ever counted the number of times that the main character in the series uses his gun. As a cop, sixteen years, street patrol, narcotics division, criminal investigation....I have never had to discharge my weapon.

What I am getting at is that the majority of American households do not own a gun and we take for granted that they know anything about them other than what they see on T.V. The Democrats have a much worse reputation for bad gun legislation than do the Republicans. There is a reason for this. The Democratic party identifies more with average Americans than does the Republican Party. The Republicans use wedge issues such as gun control to reach as many voters as possible...voters who identify with one issue in particuar....guns would not be nearly enough so they use gay rights, abortion, immigration, and the WAR ON TERRORISM.

I feel that many of the Democratic candidates use gun issues in their platforms because they know that it appeals to a majority of Americans whose gun knowledge is IGNORANCE...it is their way of competing with the maylay of wedge issues that the Republicans use.

I think that we need to educate the public and it can not be done through the media as they are bought and paid for by Corporate America, ie the Republican lacky party, about guns. Why then do you ask is it in the medias interest to portray guns so negatively. Well so that the wedge voters will see any portrayal by the media of gun ownership as a negative thing as a reenforcement of thier belief that the media has a LIBERAL BIAs and to an extent when it comes to guns they probably do, due to the fact that I stated earlier, we as gun owners are a MINORITY. We as gun owners have to educate people that guns are not bad, that people who own guns are not bad, and that guns can be owned without violence. If we achieve that, we will not have to compromise our other priciples, we will not have to be one issue voters and we will be free to vote our hearts on the issues that matter while still retaining our rights as gun NUTS. I AM A GUN NUT.

Interestingly enough, I had a conversation with my apt. manager about this subject the other day. She had some very intersting opinions regarding guns and their owners. Many gunowners have no idea what gun they have, how it operates, and have almost no safety training regarding them. I was of the belief that most were like us, that those that had guns knew them inside out and were part of the gun culture, I was wrong.

I thought back a bit to a neighbor that had just moved out, and he had some guns, didn't know what caliber, make, model, just guns to him. He had no idea of what he had or how to care for them. I thought it was odd at the time but helped him clean and familiarize him with all three of them. He then took them home and played with them, figured out how to disassemble and clean them properly, and in general, felt much better knowing the ins and outs of them.

Here's the rub, how many other gun owners are the same, and how many have carry permits for those same guns they know nothing about? Do these people present more of a hazard than not? Anyway, I'm thinking the same way as you now, it's time to educate, ignorant gunowners and anti's alike.

Have a great Kenpo day

Tortured logic. If corporate America was indeed Republican and controlled the media, their candidates and politicians would not be constantly presented by talking heads using negative implications, clever little dig remarks, extra air time for dirt, bad photographs, etc. Sorry, but the notion that the media in general is quite leftist is very believeable.
