J&G has Romanian tokarevs for $189, add $20 if I get hand select. I have a line on surplus ammo locally for $10/100. These both seem like good deals, unless I can find a tokarev locally, that way no transfer fees.

I've looked around a bit and found a couple pretty bad reviews, but nothing that really told me any good detail info. This is purely a range toy and sort of a collector piece for me as I find myself liking the older military and police style firearms.

Is the price on ammo and the pistol decent? Should I skip the J&G sale and keep my eyes open locally? How good is the surplus ammo?

Tokarev pistols are lots of fun to shoot. Interesting Communist Bloc guns. I wouldn't suggest one for home defense, or CCW though. If your intentions are just for a range blaster they are very much worth the money. The Romanian as well as the Polish, has a funky trigger block safety that was added to be able to import them into the country. I think some of the distributors still have the Yugo M57 variant with the 1911 style safety lever which I prefer. Also the M57 has one additional round capacity in the magazine. I have one of each, Romanian, Polish, and Yugo.
That ammo price doesn't sound bad. A lot of the surplus ammo supply has dried up, but SOG did advertise some Bulgarian at $139 for an 800 round case plus shipping. The surplus ammo can be a toss of the coin. Some very good, some very bad, and a lot in between. Still, for the price, and just a range blaster, it isn't bad. The surplus ammo will all be FMJ, a lot of it steel case, and some even steel core bullets.
