The idea is to pick calibers that have about the same trajectory so that you can use the same zero for your varmint gun, deer gun, and for your elk or moose gun.
Some examples I have dug up include the 257roberts/308 win/338 win. With some effort you can select loads that have about the same trajectory with all three of those calibers.
Which allows you to use your coyote shooting with the 257 as practice for sheep/deer hunting with the 308. And also for your elk/moose/bear hunting with the 338.
Another combo is the 223/303/375H&H. Now I know some people will say he is nuts! No way do the 303 & 375 shoot as flat as the 223.
It depends which loads and barrels you compare. Plus I figure the 223 would be used on small targets [prairie dogs] with a kill zone [heck whole body] much smaller than the kill zone on a deer. The point is that with the same zero for the 303 or 375 that you use with the 223 that if you could hit a prairie dog at 300 with the 223 you would hit a mule deer or elk at 300 with the 303 or 375 with the same hold.
Anyway if you compare the 150 grain loads for the 303 with Federal's premium serria gameking load for the 223 you will see at 500 yards they are close. Compare with hornady's Heavy magnum load for the 375 H&H with the 270 grain bullet.
Or really interesting for AR & Mini 14 shooters, if you compare the 223 out of a ~16" brrl it will closely match most 303 and some of the 375 loads (the 300 grain Nosler partion for one).
Anyway I am looking for other cominations that shoot close to the same trajectories.
Or any comments about this idea. BTW when I say close to the same trajectory here I am talking for hunting purposes. I figure if you can shoot groups with your deer or moose gun that are twice as big as what you shoot with your varmint gun you will be able to hit at least as far out for big game as you do for varmints. Since your kill zone on a deer or bigger critter is much bigger than most varmints.
