Eat your heart out.

It is now 5:20 pm. At about 4:15 I saw one of the biggest racks on a whitetail in my back yard that I have ever seen on a live deer. It was with two does that wanted to walk between my barn and hen house but they changed their minds and went in the opposite direction instead. The buck followed them for a short distance, turned around and went between the hen house and the corn field then into my little woods...all within 50 to 75 yards from my house. I do not hunt deer anymore, getting too old. Nevertheless, it is quite a thrill to see a rack that big on a Southern Michigan farm fed deer. I am sure someone will enjoy taking that deer this year. Drool on boys; that deer is what deer hunting is all about.

Congrat's on seeing such a fine deer!

I could sit and watch deer all day; especially a big buck like that.

Or, I'll hunt them if they're in season, and appreciate them for the meat they provide, and the enjoyment I get from hunting them.

I'm well past the days when I felt the desire to shoot every big buck I see. I enjoy them either way.

I completely understand. We have two apple trees in the front yard, and two fig bushes in the back; a couple summers ago one of the biggest bucks I've seen around here decided to visit. He walked out of the corn field behind the house and munched out, then left the same way he came. First and last time I've seen him  I'd like to cross paths again, not so much to hunt him, but just to see such a beautiful animal again.

I am eating my heart out.

I have lived in the desert for about 25 years now.
I miss that area so bad that I think about it probably every hour.
I got three years to retirement and I am heading right back to that area some place. I am from Ohio but I am presently thinking about a little further south. Maybe Kentucky.

I enjoy watching wildlife more than I do shooting wildlife. I mainly hunt as an excuse to get out in the wilds. I am not opposed to shooting game and I do on occasion. But I have spent MANY a day sitting there with deer walking by all day while I admire them and have no intention at all of shooting one.

+1 on that. I've been known to go "hunting" many days without a bow or gun, armed only with binoculars and perhaps a camera.

At 10 or so years of age I wanted to invent a "rifle" that you could tote and instead of shooting a projectile would make a loud report and pop a picture with the crosshairs in place so you could enjoy your ability to stalk, spot and shot placement with out ever killing the animal. Then with a few bucks you could have it enlarged up to poster size.
With today's technology it would be very possible.
For ya'll that say watching wild life is more important or that hunting is an excuse to get out in the woods... Lemme ask how many hours over how many trips do ya'll spend thru the rest of the year just 'splorin' the woods? Nothing like seeing the first velvet antlered deer over the bright green summer grass...

Brent, I can't remember the maker but that scope already exists. Put a blank cartridge in there and it's done.

I had a little 4 pointer walk withing 10 yards of my squatting spot yesterday. I could have taken the picture without any magnification.

Yes it may but I am talking 1978...
What that scope does is snap a recoil induced picture. what I wanted was a dedicated "picture gun" that did not fire ammo rather the lens would be in the muzzle or as these scopes in the scope but it would produce a loud "rifle report" instead of discharging a round.

More than enough. Been living on the same farm my whole little life and have spent countless days exploring and getting to know the land. Some of my fondest memories are from moonlit nights in the woods, camping out in a marsh in the springtime and listening to the frogs, or stumbling upon a hidden clearing only to discover shed antlers left by an unseen buck. Being out in the woods is just part of life for me, no special trips or planning.

For me the prospect of taking a deer is the last and least important aspect, if I counted all of the deer I've let walk it would probably sicken those "if it's brown it's goin' down" guys. Too many people get so worked up and eager to kill, they don't even enjoy themselves otherwise. If something just doesn't feel right I won't take the shot, but if everything seems fine I won't hesitate at all.

12SS, Yes that is what I was after. Please, if it sounds like I am being condescending, I ain't just truly curious. I know I should spend more time out there myself. A slightly foggy coo morning in spring or fall watching bunnies feeding or deer moving and feeding is the cat's meow. The fact that out of season treks allow you to get so close to game is really an awe inspiring feeling of being one with nature at that moment.

i just had the nicest 10 point i've ever seen run into the rear 1/4 panel of my car on the way home from work. i saw him come out of the ditch near the creek & run opposite my direction till he was right beside me & then darted out. luckily it was just a glancing blow but his antlers sure mucked up my antenna. that thing isn't going up or down again. what a buck though, i hope he's okay. i went back & saw no evidence of him or any blood or hair so i'm sure he's a little sore but even wiser. the stupid cat that ran out in front of me & did the back & forth friggy dig 5 minutes later didn't fare as well. just a weird night on the ride home from work.
