I live in the eastern woods(michigan) What are the limitations as far as game goes( how small can I go, how big can i go) with the .308 winchester out of a 22" barrel?
maximum range around here floats at about 300 yards.

Assuming reasonable shot placement, I'd say it is ok for deer and black bear (up to about 400-500 pounds). If you have any 700 or 800 pounders in your neck of the woods I'd opt to carry a little more, or be very picky about my shots.

Bullfrog,
The .308 will take any game in your area. Includeing the 500-700 pound Black bears. I've been using the .308 in PA. for about 21 years. PA has pretty similar terrain and shot distances. PA. has some of the biggest Black bear in the world. I don't feel under gunned. If I were going after Grizz I'd go bigger but for home state hunting the .308 will bag everything from woodchucks to bear. It is a little big for squirrel though!

Squirrels will fear you, rabbit will run at the sound of your truck......But remember one thing, your 300 yards is not what the .308 had in mind. It is still gonna be trucking past 700 and 800 yards. Be safe and careful in them there woods.

.308 and 30-06 are VERY close in performance to each other. I would trust the 06 just about anywhere..................so the .308 is in the same category.

Bullfrog,

The only things I've heard of that the .308 won't handle East of the Rockies are:
1. It won't dance and it can't sing worth a hoot.

2. It won't take out the garbage.

3. It can't cook.

Other than those three things it will handle most everything.

Doc Hudson :p

BTW, The .308 Win cant do those things West of the Rockies either. LMH

Doc: I take exception to #3 ... you just aren't shooting those squirrels close enough ... that or you've latched onto one of them thar low flash powders ;)

....And take it from a guy that kills does with a .375...

You are just fine with the .308. It is an accurate, powerful cartridge that can take everything you want out to 200-300 yards. Go with the 165-168, even the 180 grain bullet, and you won't know the difference between it and the .30-06. Guarantee.

and you won't know the difference between it and the .30-06. Guarantee............what you hit won't know the difference either!
