East German Makarov

What can you tell me about this gun? Assuming I'm willing to accept the caliber how would it do for a carry gun?

Sid K, I didn't buy a Makarov for a long time thinking it was just a large Walther clone. What a fool I was! These pistols are better than PP, PPK, or PPK/s. The EG models are put together beautifully and they are incredibly accurate. Buy some Corbon for carry and it will definitely get you through the night. Regards, Richard.

I too was shocked at the accuracy and quality
of these little pistols,I have a Bulgarian
military issue and an east german model,
both are excellent,I believe the Bulgie is
more accurate while the EG has the best
finish. Check out "makarov.com" lots of info.

--And about the same size/weight of a J-Frame snubby. www.aimsurplus.com is selling the Bulgarians for $119.95. They're eligible for C&R.

Few moving parts (25), one screw in the grip. Everything else is "slotted" together. Easy to work on. Simple to tune. Super reliable, accurate. The "hot" Mak ammo is effective stuff.

They are the AK of the pocket guns for sure. :)And the price is right. They are not as "refined" as some guns that cost 3 to 4 times as much but work just as well. If I had to say anything non positive on Maks it would be they are just a bit large for the caliber, that soviet over built concept. :) :) I must say they are a poor joke for what they where designed for as a combat servise belt gun "ie" the 1911 or M-9 of the soviets. But as a pocket gun they are just great. I do prefer my PPK as it is smaller and lighter but it cost a lot of bucks and took some tuning and fitting to get up to feeding like a Mak. :) Out of the box the Mak wins hands down.

I've owned a Russian .380 and a 9x18. Great pistols. I would recommend the Bulgarian Mak for CCW because of the lower profile fixed sights. Get Makwrap grips for CCW, Pearce for standard use.

I bought a Russian Makarov about 5 years ago. I would not give it up. I got it in 9x17(.380 ACP) because at the time (1995) it was very uncertain if the 9x18 ammo would be available. I do not regret my decision. This is one sturdy little beast. With practice, I was able to hit quite well with it. If you could see my front sight, you would see why. It is rather tiny!!!. It is of note that the only time that I seriously thought that I would have to use a gun to defend myself and my family, the "Mak" was what was in my hand!!

Oh, one more thing. Everything that you would ever want or need to know about the Makarov can be found at www.makarov.com

I don't really have anything to add to this discussion, I just wanted to say that I LOVE my Russian Makarov (pronounced mah-KAR-off). I've used it for CCW in the past, when the weather's right and I can wear a sportscoat, but I usually carry my MK40, 642, or NAA .22 Magnum, mainly because I'm worried about ruining the finish on the non-stainless steel gun.

It's a great gun, whether you use it for CCW or just plinking. Everyone who is able should have one in their arsenal. The price is PHENOMENAL for what you get, and practice ammo is dirt cheap if you shop around.

Get the east german one...fit and finish is that much better, trigger pull is very good...and the difference in price is nothing.....fubsy....

fubsy - and all: I checked out three in a shop here (VA) ... Russian .380, Bulg and EG 9s. Bulg was $15 more than Russn and EG was 65 higher than Bulg - well over $200. I queried that and they checked their list and said "Yep, that's the price." The Russn was new I'd say, the other 2 had some surface wear - holster probably.

Anyone have an idea why the EG was so much higher? (Other than "traffic will bear").

The E. Germans are suppose to be the creme of the crop. Better fit and finish as stated above. I got my E. German when SOG in Ohio first got them. I paid $159. for mine handpicked. It's really nice and shows a very little holster wear. I don't think other then test firing it wasn't fired much.
My local emporium has new Bulgarians for $189.
Get the E.German you won't regret it :)

Talk about a great gun. I don't think anyone would regret buying one. I know I didn't. You can't do much better value-wise.

There are Bulgarians and then there are Bulgarians. At least this is what I've been told. Though everyone seems to agree that the EG Maks are the best for fit and finish, I'd have to say that the Bulgarian military surplus Maks run a close second.

There are two basic versions of the Bulgies--commercial models and military models. I'd recommend going to www.jcarmory.com and taking a look at the Bulgarians he has there. These are "unissued" Maks, so they're the closest thing you'll get to a new gun in the military model. They've never been fired and have been stored in cosmoline/packing grease/wax wrap for almost 40 years. If you're going to buy a "new" gun, get an unissued Mak.
