I have what I believe to be an early Remington No 4 Rolling Block solid frame in .32RF with a 24" tapered oct barrel. I need help with the build date, the serial number is 996XX. I read on the net yesterday that there were approx 144,000 solid frame Model 4's produced during the period 1890 - 1899. With my low serial number I believe that would put my No 4 somewhere north of the middle?
Also, I know that my No 4 is a .32L RF, but the barrel is not marked anywhere .32L RF. There is a 22 stamped above the serial number, but only 22 no .22L, .22, .22S or .22LR. An old Remington gun guy told me it was the barrel weight, I am not too sure on that one? I added a picture of the 22 mark to this post. Nowhere on the barrel or receiver is it stamped No 4 either.
