I'd like to hear from those of you who have Eagle Secret Service grips on your Smith J frames. Are they durable, comfortable, and more concealable than the standard rubber?Do they degrade your shooting accuracy significantly?
I've had a rosewood set on my 638 for about four years with no problems of durabilty. I disliked the finger groove but a dremel took care of that. They fill the gap between the front strap and the trigger guard a litte more than I like but, then again, dremel to the rescue. The nice thing about rosewood is that if you do some reshaping you won't have to refinish them, just buff the wood to bring out the natural luster.
Hope this helps.
I had the same rosewood grips on my 642 for a few months. Handsome, slick (no dragging on the draw), finger grooves that fit my small, fat hands, and a estucheon screw that stayed tight. Great workmanship. But I prefer the factory rubber grips. They help cusion the shock of the 158-gr. +P loads I fire and are a bit more controllable with repeat shots. I never tossed my Secret Service grips, though -- they are still in the orignal box!
I have two sets of Eagle SS grips in Ebony for my J-frames. They are great, but I prefer the feel of the smooth rather than the checkered version. I replaced them with CT LaserGrips which have the same feel, but have the laser built in. Although for shooting with the rubber grip is more comfortable, for carry I prefer the less sticky nature of the wood.
