E-mail from my fun shop

Last night I received an e-mail from
a gun shop owner who told me that the
NICS computers went down about 3:00
PM and were still down at 7:00 PM
when he left for home.
Anyone else know of any problems?

Fun shop :)

It really makes one wonder how accurate this NICS thing is. I have heard so many stories of this thing not working or having problems its unreal. And they want to make a computerized gun? "Sorry BG, I can't shoot, the system is down and I am not sure when it will be back up."

As a system developer I can tell you that systems do not go down this often unless they are either extremely poorly designed or they a willfully taken down. Reliability of modern computer systems is very good if the systems are designed and run by comeptent staff.

If it is because of incompetence then it certainly justifies most peoples perception of government and the quality of work performed therein.

If it is done willfully by the government, then misstrust of government and politicians is justified.

I believe that it is a combination of the two. Even poorly designed systems should run more often than this and I believe that this administration is capable of anything to achieve it's nefarious goals.

TexasRusty,
I agree.
I wonder how long it will take for people to realize that this is a Clintonian "trick" to slow or stop gun sales to legal buyers.

Rusty, this is a government-run system. It's likely a combination of incompetence and malevolence; i.e. "Whoops, I just nuked the system... ah, screw it, the only people who care are those gun freaks."

Now, see, if the system was privatized, it would really *be* instant, and 99.9% uptime (assuming it runs on *nix instead of NT ;)).

I work in the computer business, designing and verifying CPUs that go in big servers.

To give you an indea of how reliable commercial systems are, customers like credit card companies, airlines, amazon.com, and e*trade demand 99.999% uptime - called "five nines." That's an average of 5 minutes and 15 seconds of downtime per YEAR.

There is a back door that congress left for the dealers. When NICS is down for a certain amount of time dealers can still sell. How ever most won't because they are afraid of repecussions from the ATF and Klintonistas

You folks have noticed, I assume, that whenever this Administration is caught doing something illegal, nefarious or malevolent, they cry about not being crooks and claim incompetence. I guess we are supposed to be comforted by having an incompetent government.

The odd thing is they are mostly correct. They are, at once, crooked and incompetent.

If we organize, get out the vote, and work hard we just might throw the rascals out! With any luck GW will bring honor and respect back to the White House. The current occupants will find themselves fending off lawsuits for the rest of their lives.

I prefer armed combat to unarmed combat. It's easier on the knuckles.

So if those corporations don't get 99.999% uptime, they take their business elsewhere? That's what we should do! Oh wait...it doesn't quite work that way.

Specialist,
I think that "back door" only opens
if the gun dealer has put you into
the computer and he gets no reply
for 3 days. If the computers are
down, he can't enter your info and
thus, no guns are sold. If I'm wrong
on this, please, someone post.
I think it's an attempt to do an
"electronic" end run around the
second amendment.

Did anyone ELSE hear that the police based systems were still opperational but the NICS was the only one down? I heard a report these two systems share the same databases. So..... a LEO could do a check but a gun shop could not?????????? On the same data files?????? Hmmmmmmm (Smell of tuna wafting through the air.....)
