Folks,

Maybe everyone has seen this already, but it was new to me.

I just got my latest copy of the Cheaper Than Dirt! catalog and I noticed an interesting item on page 3. "DRT 9mm ammunition - One of a kind!" it said. One-of-a-kind is right. Each round of this ammunition supposedly contains fine powder instead of solid lead, and each round spins at a rate of 160,000 RPM when fired (from a conventional weapon, I suppose).

A round will supposedly not penetrate a house cat, but will go through steel plate and leave a hole "that looks like a cutting torch was used". The powder core automatically "finds its center" while spinning, unlike a lead bullet. Wounds are typically 5" x 5" with full 100% energy dissipation.

The item description sort of goes on and on...pretty funny stuff. At least, I thought it was funny. I thought it was maybe fake, kind of like Games Magazine used to do..."find the fake ad" and all of that (does anybody but me remember that?). What do you guys think? Is this ammo for real? For Pete's sake, its got hot chicks on the box!

Bullet RPM is going to be determined by a combination of velocity and twist rate. There is no way they are getting 160,000 rpm from 9mm ammo.

Let's see...
With a twist rate of 1:9 (about right for 9mm) and a velocity of 1200 fps (I don't have the catalog), you get 133.33 rotations per second, or 8000 rpm.
DRT is it the Most Accurate Ammo Ever?

From their online ad for 9mm...

This might be it, both in accuracy and terminal ballistics!
This ammo has been hush, hush for over four years. We saw it being tested at the Military Proofing grounds and everyone said, "that is not possible" after they saw the results! The DRT name stands for Dynamic Research Technologies, or as the guys shooting the M24 Sniper Rifles say, "Dead Right There"!

This ammo does the exact opposite of what you would expect. These rounds will shoot through a 2" x 4" but will not shoot through an invader in your home. Here is the best part, these are ideal for crowd control, home defense, or close quarter combat, the bullet will hit the target and dissipate inside the target, killing them instantly without going through and injuring an innocent bystander.

How is that possible?
It is in the core. Totally different then anything on the market, a powder, not a solid lead blob, but a fine powder mixture.
Here is how it works;

If you filled a 55 gallon drum with a zillion number 9 shotgun pellets and then shot it out of some space age rail gun with the round spinning at 160,000 RPM, you would have a very deadly round. That is kind of what is happening but, then enters the dynamics of of the fine powder! When it encounters a solid object such as a 2" x 4" it shoots right through but when it encounters an object denser than itself like a brick wall or concrete or heavy gauge steel, it disintegrates, returning to powder with no ricochet.

The magic occurs on an Organic Target. The fine powder is as fine as talcum powder. When it contacts the organic target, the powder is spinning at such a high rate it instantly disperses, creating a crater in the target resulting in Instant Death. The wounds are typically 5" deep and 5" wide. A full 100% energy dissipation as the bullet totally disappears to invisible dust.

The accuracy comes from two attributes; First is extreme attention to detail in the manufacturing process, much greater than even handloads. Second has to do with the powder core. Solid lead cores are never perfect, they are off center or not symmetrical and when spun at 160,000 rpm, they flight off course and then at 1,000 meters your groups never get much better than 10". With the powder core, the material finds it center when spinning improving the accuracy. Besides, this fine powder is heavier than lead, so a standard weight projectile is smaller offering a lower wind profile and enhanced accuracy.

So guys, this is it.
The most accurate ammo we have ever seen; and the most deadly. We have been asked not to tell stories of this ammo being used in the big sand box, but the stories are getting out and the unheard of results have increased demand for this one of a kind - the only ammo you ever need to own, DRT ammunition.

Demand is tight and we only have a few boxes of DRT Ammo to sell

This happens to be the same text as the .223 79 gr. version.
http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/AMM268-1.html

So let's see, say you have a 1:7 twist rate and approximately 2700 fps for a 79 gr. projectile. That would give you 386 rotations per second, or 23143 RPM.

In order to get 160,000 RPM out of a 1:7 barrel (does anyone make a faster barrel?), you would need a velocity of 18500+ fps.

Well no freakin' kidding.
How does that compare to a 9mm round?
See, the problem all this time is that we insist on shooting things with SOLID projectiles.... if we'd only realized that shooting things with DUST was the answer!

Let's see you divide the energy of a 9mm slug into a couple million pieces of dust and they all have how much energy? Well, about 1:2,000,000 of a 9mm slug which is ZERO!

Double Naught, You have a math problem. 1 turn in 9 refers to inches= 1.33333333 turn per foot x 1200fps = 1600 turns per second x 60 seconds per minute= 96,000 rpm.

Is this stuff going to get the same hype as Black Talons when someone finds out that theres no evidence left when shooting an 'organic target'?

Greetings,
I suppose some testing would be in order. It's kinda odd how the maker says its the best there is, yet I haven't heard one thing about it from any law enforcement, military personel, or anyone . I was lossed at the barrel filled with bb's spinning around in outerspace:confused:
It very may well be powerful, but with what was it....5 inches of penetration your probably going to have a hard time putting down those BIG mamajammas.
Take care

Isn't there another ammo out there with mall ninjas and lightning on the box that uses powder as well? Claims to be safer for in home defense and AIRPLANE USE , due to it not penetrating walls or something like that. I think we need more rounds that don't penetrate walls but still penetrate people, but until we get a phaser I'm betting solid bullets will be the way to go...

EDIT: Ahh, here we go...

ARGHHH! LOL. That's what I get for trying to type with my phone.

Thanks for the correction. Good catch on the math.

Still, their numbers seem a bit weird,no? 160,000 rpm seems high for 9mm.

Nah, I'm sure their gun either has 66% more rifling per inch or 66% higher muzzle velocity. You just gotta think outside the box.;)

DRT Ammo is real!

I do believe Cheaper Than Dirt may have gotten in a bit of trouble for exaggerating there description of this ammo, but I'm here to tell you it is real! It is great stuff and although it'll probably still go through a house cat, the casing is all that is left. The body tissue expands the casing, and the powered metal turns the vitals into mush.
