Duty Revolver

West Fargo PD did until the early 90's. +P .38 ammo with 125 gr HP's if I recall rightly. Switched to Sig 220 .45 ACP's.

Do you carry one of these now?

This is for a job I start next week. Limitations are - 1. No Glocks 2. No SAO pistols 3. 38spl, 9mm or 45 cals only. 4. Barrel must be longer than 2in. I can use a company issued weapon but must sign it in and out each day. The guns that I own which meet the specs are CZ75B 9mm, Colt Official Police 38spl 4in or S&W 686 6in. (new).

In the past, I have carried a 6" Smith & Wesson model
19, and for a very short time a 6" S&W model 29. Then,
I got a little older and a lot wiser, eventually going to
the lighter S&W 4" model 19, .357 magnum!:D  :)

Best Wishes,

Tom- Frankly given those choices I'd sell the 686 (easy to find, you can always replace it, very pricey) and buy a 9mm SIG.

Now it's time for every one else to tell you to sell them all and get a Wilson 1911.

Tom B: The joke around here used to be that W.F.P.D hired their officers by the pound and the inch. The bigger fellers had no trouble carrying those 6'' guns and sitting down in their Crown Victoria's. Times and cars change. Regardless it seems that either your CZ75 or O.P. should serve you well. The irony in logical's concluding sentence was priceless.

I would have to reccommend that you sell one of you guns or if you can afford it, buy a SIG in 45 or a CZ-97, but something in the 45 Cal. S/A D/A.
If your new job puts you life on the line then go with the best you owe it to yourself and family.

Good luck on you new Job.

Sounds like either the Official Police or the 686 would do nicely. the CZ is also a great gun.

You're getting lots of recomendations for SiGs and they are really great guns too. I own a bunch of them but my M-19, N frames, Colt Army Special (even older than your OP) get far more hip time than the SiGs.

I carried a 4" 686 for about 6 months in 1985 untill I could switch to a M1911. Been carring that everyday for over 17 years, nothing better.

Think convenience and comfort - - -

Tom B., in answer to your initial question, no, never carried a 686 of any kind. Lots of other revolvers, though, including some longer barrels: 6" Colt Officers Model Match, an M29 and a couple of 1955 S&Ws (pre-mod 25.) Also a 5" mod 27. Comfortable enough in a high ride, but I am tall.

Unless you have a snap lock swivel drop holsters, it is uncomfortable to sit wearing a long revolver. I used to choose chairs without arm rests when wearing the long barrels. Not too bad in a car with bucket seats and no center console.

Your requirements include--
3. 38spl, 9mm or 45 cals only.
From this, I take it that you would not be able to use .357 mag cartridges in the Mod 686, even if you chose it.

You asked first about the 6" 686, so I deduce that you are not overly confident in your CZ75.

In your position, I would probably choose the Colt OP 4". It is comfortable to wear, even with a drop holster. It is heavy enough to handle the best +P .38 cartridges available. (I strongly prefer the Rem or Win 158 LSWCHP.) There's no worry about banging an adjustable sight out of alignment in a duty holster. Comfort, strength, convenience, and you wouldn't be giving up a great deal of power. Also--Nowadays, a man packing a wheel gun is frequently considered comfortable with his own abilities. Appearences and self-confidence DO count for a lot.

Unless you anticipate being set upon by more than one or two bad guys at once, and since you have no need to conceal your sidearm, I can see no particular advantage in choosing the CZ.

Best wishes with your new job.
Johnny

I used to carry a 686 with a 4 inch barrel.

If I could to it again today I would, but with the 7 or maybe even 8 shot capacity gun.

And yep, I'd feel jsut fine with it as opposed to a high cap auto. I even set a speed record at the academy on thier el presidente drill when going through. Five of us had revolvers, nineteen had semis... Record was undoubtably smashed long ago though - if they even bothered to keep track of those things.
