Dupage County, IL, melting guns II--would be funny if it were slightly less stupid.

Some of you will remember Miss D's post about the Dupage County Sherriff's office making a big deal about how great it was that they were going to melt a bunch of guns used by criminals. (Chicago area.)

Well, now there's a postscript to the story: if you recall, the guns were to be melted down and used in highway construction. Apparently, in Illinois, if they resold the guns or auctioned them off, criminals would find a way to pass the background checks, bring in fake FOIDs and wait the waiting periods out and then take the guns out to commit various acts of horrendous mayhem. There was even a quote my fiance's hometown newspaper by the sherriff stating that if the guns were disassembled or even thrown in a lake(?) there would still be a chance that they could be "used against more victims." Apparently resale ranks lower on the option list than tossing the guns into the lake.

The funniest part was the emphasis on how we'd all find ourselves driving on the remains of criminals' guns, now purged of their evil and serving a positive purpose for society as rebar used to reinforce the highways of Illinois. They melted 400 guns, their take for several years, and got "two 2-foot-long rebars."
It would be hilarious if these people weren't in charge of the police protection for that entire county.

All those guns and only 2 bars????? Gee sure glad recycling works well.

I wasn't aware that the FOID could be forged, kinda hard to make that watermark in the back don't ya think? sweet home Chicago :D
