dumping a Win 1300 magazine

Hello the camp! (from a brand new member)

I signed up hoping someone could offer wisdom re. a problem I'm having with a Winchester 1300. To wit:

It's a pain to unload shells through the loading port. They often get stuck (particularly, the last two) and won't drop free without a lot of jiggling and fiddling.

Is this a common fault with this shotgun? Is there a simple fix? It looks as if I simply filed about a mm off the lips of the shell carrier, the problem would be solved-- it would then push down low enough to allow a shell's rim to clear the carrier.

But would that screw up the feed? This is mainly a home-defense gun and I don't want to do that!

On my 1300, the spring pressure, even with one round loaded, is sufficient to pop the shell out past my thumb. I hold the gun inverted (loading port up). If the shell fails to clear the gun I can roll it to the side and let the shell drop free.

Your magazine spring may be slightly weak if the shells aren't being pushed out briskly. When new, it would pop the shell out for a lap around the bedroom at eyeball height. (i.e. well clear of the receiver).

I guess I wasn't clear, but thanks!

It's not the spring, the strength of which is fine.

The problem is that the shell's rim is failing to clear end of the shell carrier, and won't pop free.

After reading this and AZwart's comment it was back to the safe to try out some things. Previously I had no problem unloading the 1300 with Federal #00 Buck and #00 Reduced Recoil rounds. However, a Remington #6 load did hang up a touch.

Here's what I discovered - your experience may vary.
1. Using my thumb to release the shell stop caused a hang-up 90% of the time.
2. Using my right index finger released the shell about 98% of the time.
3. When using my thumb and the shell catching the tip of the carrier, slight upward pressure at the top of the case freed it from captivity.

Thus, with the shotgun inverted and depressing the shell carrier, try using your right index finger on the shell stop. If a shell does hang up, use light upwards pressure on the upper half of the shell with your finger or thumb. This should lift it just enough to pop clear of the carrier.

Good luck!
